It's normal to get 0-5 knock counts while starting. Knock counts should stabilize after that.

Knock counts are how many times the knock sensor noticed something. Spark retard is how many degrees of timing have been cut out due to knock. 5 knock counts is hardly anything. 5 degrees of spark retard (also known as knock retard (KR)) isn't good.

Check/replace your ignition components. Use a piston stop to verify that your balancer isn't spun, then make sure your timing is set at 0.

The way knock counts are calculated vary. In other words, it depends on your scantool. Datamaster displays least significant bytes. Diacom displays most significant bytes. 256 knock counts on Datamaster would equal 1 knock count on Diacom.

On Diacom, I usually see 4 or 5 knock counts after startup. It stays there until I hammer it. I might see 2 or 3 additional knock counts then, and Diacom will show something like 7 or 8. Did that make sense?

What about if the count stays at 5 dosent stabilize should i be worry.

Are you referring to Spark Retard or Knock Counts??

Knock counts.

knock counts only refers to the nuber or times the ECM has seen knock. it will only be a number that rises and will reset itself once it hits a certain number. counts dont mean that it's knocking "AT THAT MOMENT". but it does mean that it has seen knock in the past.

the important thing is that you have 0 knock retard. and you want 0 all the time. however that is like the holy grail. good luck in your quest.

Like Waller said, knock counts just indicate that there was knock in the past. 5 knock counts might mean it saw .1 degree of KR, or it might mean that it saw 10 degrees of KR. Knock counts basically just tells you that your knock sensor is working. It indicates that there was "something" and nothing more.

Knock retard is the important one. This tells how much knock there was. Ideally you want 0, but you are likely to see at least a little occasionally. http://invisibill.unimatrix01.org/sy/track3.uni is one of my passes down the strip. I have a little bit of KR at shifts and TCC lockup. On my graph, I have Spark Retard in red, TPS % in black, RPM in blue, and Boost in pink. If you do that, KR stands out, and you can easily compare it to your RPM to see if it's due to shifts.
