ISAC alky controller

..hard to swallow
Re: ISAC alky controller

I had one installed in my buick last weekend and here are my thoughts...

1) I found that my stock wastegate was going to 20lbs so even though the controller will shut off boost when there is a lean/alky problem, if your gate is allowing a ton of boost it might not matter

2) If you are connecting wideband, boost, and alky there is a pretty good amount of wiring that needs to be done. Not to say it can't be done at home but if you aren't handy with electrical work you might want to get some help. Big Wood Racing is supportive and will help you over the phone

3) When using it for the boost controller I needed to pick up a $30 solenoid from Grainger, which isn't included in the kit.

That being said I really like the datalogging capabilties and it's nice to be able to fine tune your alky. This could be especially useful for code59 guys. For example if you have a chip reading closed loop wideband it will likely pull fuel when alky comes on because the wideband sees it going very rich. In this case you could stop the ecm from pulling fuel and have the ISAC control the amount of alky that is being sprayed. This way you don't bog down your motor and you also keep it from running too lean if there is an alky problem. The system seems to wire up to any alcohol system that you already have installed in your vehicle. I mounted mine in the glove compartment and it gives a nice stealth look. I still need to fine tune it and it seems like a dyno would be helpful for doing this. For what it's worth I did hit 98mph in the 1/8 this past weekend with 0.0 degrees of knock.

Re: ISAC alky controller

Code59 and in fact any original code syty chip does NOT have closed loop under boost anyways. The ISAC controller "CAN" provide a closed loop fuel using the alky under boost. So honestly code59 and this controller can work toghether well in that environment.

There are more wires than a stand alone boost controller has, there are more wires than a stand alone alky control would have, there is LESS than if you had both installed serperate and has more features packed inside.

I should have mine wired as a boost controller this weekend. Alky will be after my race in texas.

Re: ISAC alky controller

This is the downside of heavy duty actuators. You cant really go lower than spring pressure on the actuator. If you haven't, I'd suggest lengthening the rod until you barely have to pull it to get it on your wastegate puck.

The wiring really isnt that big a deal. For some reason your car gave the guys a fit. Its most likely because theyre not as familiar with Buicks as I am and didnt know where to pick up the needed inputs, signals, etc. I did talk to them a couple of times regarding your install and told them where to get their inputs, etc. I intended to be at the shop for your stuff but because of logistics, I couldnt make it.

There will more than likely be a datalogging upgrade/fix in an upcoming firmware/software release. Since the units are field upgradeable, you wont need to send it back or anything tho.

If you're having boost issues, feel free to call me and Ill talk you through setting it up. Actuators make figuring out your solenoid ratio a little wonky. External gates work much better but actuators are usable, just a little trickier to get going initially. Once you have the correct solenoid ratio in the software, its pretty easy from there, tho.
