Is my TY DEAD??????

Hello sytyers,

The Ty has been running great....until this morning. I went to start her up and it took forever. She was hesitating, RPM's all over, surging, then eventual death. She would start up and run eventually though (with these conditions except cutting out completely). With this she would spew white then blue then black smoke. I haven't been driving her hard at all. No racing or brick feet lately, just cruisin round town. I get codes 33, 43, and 53. Any idea of what could be wrong? What bothers me is that smoke...

SYO237

SyTy Registry
Code 33
Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor Circuit (Signal Voltage High - Low Vacuum)

Code 43
Electronic Spark Control (ESC) Circuit

dunno 53 offhand...

go ahead and check your MAP sensor and all the vaccum lines around it...

I have the circuit system and probable causes for the codes. I can't check anything right now. The black smoke though is rich fuel and I am suspecting that since I haven't had a tune-up in 1.5-2 years that a plug or two is bad or a wire. I did check and made sure no wires were loose. What's weird is that it just started up fine (bout 5 min ago after sitting all day) but after driving for some 30 seconds it started cutting out. The cutting out is barely apparent at speeds above 25. Seems as thought the problem is *only* when the Ty is in idle. Sooo.....
ps code 53 is system over voltage
Thanks for any advice

Serious about performance
No tuneup in 2 years? My Sy requires a new cap and rotor every 3-4 months, no joke. The plugs are also eaten for lunch (maybe every 4-5 months.) Pull off the coil wire on the center of your cap and take a look at the color of the terminal. It should indicate how badly your ignition needs replacing. On these trucks, the ignition parts is absolutely critical to performance!! And only use the parts mentioned in http://syty.net/faq.php !!

Currently stock with AC plugs, Accell wires, and Accel Cap'n Rotor.
I will be doing the following:
Top Dead Center
Conrad DR2012G
Taylor Wires (TAY-74632)
NGK UR6IX plugs
Vacuum Line replacement
maybe PCV valves
(starter just replaced with 10 gauge wire heat shield and wrap)
Gauges - Boost, Fuel Pressure, Trans Temp
Trans Cooler
(already have 160 thermo)
KB AFPR
IC line replace with heater hose
Jabsco IC pump wired always on
if running right after above and tuned
3 Bar and Ultimate Chip
(have stock airbox with KN Filter)

I am not familiar with suspension. My Ty drives pretty rough. Will greasing the suggested parts in the FAQ's fix this? What do I need to replace to get a comfortable but not too soft ride? I will be putting Baers on the front and would like to do the susp too.

Lastly any suggestions on where to get the truck painted in the Illinois/chicagoland area. During the schoolyear I can leave it at a shop since I don't bring it down to Champaign with me? I want to do the whole truck incl. cladding. Pricing?

Thanks

*cringes again as he reads the use of Accell products*

Suggestions for you:

First things first... you need to get your truck running good before you worry about going fast... forget the gauges, AFPR, and Ultimate for now...

Do GM Top engine cleaner FIRST!!!! "BEFORE" you install... the ignition components...
http://www.sytyarchives.com/howto/viewarticle.php?article_name=top_end_cleaner.php&dir=engine
Make sure to change your oil after TEC...

Next do a full tune up (Taylor wires, NGK UR5 plugs, Conrad cap/rotor, check timing)

check for any leaks of any kind...

Replace PCV valves..
check for vacuum leaks.. (Purchase Ian's kit if he has any left, nice product well worth it)

When's the last time you changed you tranny fluid or filter?? what's the condition of the fluid?? been over two years or 15,000 miles?? then at a minimum pull the tranny pan and inspect it or have it done... and replace the filter & fluid in the pan..

Add the transcooler and maybe a deep pan like the derale ..

When's the last time you replaced the Transfer Case fluid??? been 2 years ?? replace the fluid

When's the last time you flushed your radiator...?? been two years?? do it..

When's the last time you changed the IC fluid..>>> been two years? do it...
this can be done at the same time you reroute the IC lines with hose

Done everything above?????? Now consider purchasing a scan tool(Datamaster, laptop)....

I'm assuming your suspension is shot or very old?? ever replaced anything?? or have previous owners ever done so?? shocks?? steering components?? bushings are bound to worn out by now... might consider a polygraphite steering/suspension kit from PST ....

if you feel like it... purchase a suspension techniques sway bar.. it's worth it though...

finish that come back...

BTW: consider getting to know the Chi-Town peeps in your own Backyard... like green and max... maybe even BW (heard he eats small children).. wealth of knowledge in your area...

Well at the time I did Accell I think that's what everyone was using and now I am done with Accell :) I was planning on doing the top end cleaner but am pissed because I just replaced the oil and filter and would need to change it again (Mobil 1 fully synth doesn't come cheap). On the pos. side I think its also suggested to change the plugs after the top end and as I said before I was going to do that. Coolant both IC and main was flushed at my last tuneup and I will do that again. I had already contacted Ian about a vacuum set. Some miscommunication but conclusion is he is all out. If any one has a set they want to sell let me know. Tranny fluid changed at my last tuneup same place I got the other stuff done (ignition, coolant, etc.) at a place on McCormick in Skokie IL? suggested by Opie. I will do the trans cooler and replace the transfer case fluid. As far as suspension what exactly do you suggest? Part #'s / where to buy? I've seen you post lots of good info and suggestions and would def. take yours :D I haven't touched the suspension and it was pretty rough when I bought it so I am suspecting the previous owner didn't do much.

Hmm might say I can relate to where you're coming from... it's strictly a time thing... patience.. and the ability to learn... I've been where you've been .. don't sweat it..

For PST.. check this GP might still be going on now as we speak.. http://syty.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=13730

Suspension Techniques swaybars can be order either through summit racing or shox.com ... either place you shouldn't pay more than $115 .. check around.. Bilstein HD shocks are nice for the price... If you order from shox.com talk to Daryl ask to get them for $45 a piece... same as the syty GP I setup years ago... there are other shock options as well... some like Koni's .. nice adjustable shock , but expect to pay around over $300 for 4..

check sytyauthority.net for P/N's ... Jas has the P/N's you're looking for..

Sounds as if all you need is a tune up... Again... contact brian green... Ryan, Opie, Max and get to know the chi-town crew... they're good guys and also have a wealth of knowledge... they can start you on the right track...

check the ALDL page off of sportmachines.com for general info on code refferences... a good source for quick info..

Also might consider buying the Typhoon supplement manual for your year..

I contacted Opie earlier. I will be ordering the syty CD. I was going to purchase the HD's and a rear sway bay as its suggested by many. Just wasn't sure what else I need for the suspension. I will try to get in on the pst GP as the set looks great and is at a nice discount. Thanks again for all your time and help. Hopefully if all goes well I'll be able to make syty nats at Chitown this year. Now I just need to buy everything and get it going.

Just to update:
Truck is running beautifully (as it used to). Turns out after replacing nearly every sensor that is was the ECM that went bad. Popped in a new one and wallah, she purrs like a kitten with the new ATR SS exhaust.
