My Ty came with one and kept burning up my spark plugs every 6 months. I took it off and never regretted it.

Just my thoughts.

msd stuff works fine most people dont liek them because they have other problems, and the msd makes the problems worse usually because its ignition related, run good plugs and keep the cap and rotor changed often and u be fine, the truck will start and run and idle better from what i have seen.

I have one and really like it. It help with the strange idle that the truck had with the stock chip. Mpg went up as well, Before installing it, I would go thru plugs every 4 months. The NGK UR6IX part # 7348 have been in the truck for 1.5 years now and still look and run like new plugs. I am also running the MSD SY/TY plug wires part # 31849. The only problem that I had was when I try using the MSD coil Part # 8226, When I use the 6A part # 6200 with the plugs wires and the coil. The truck burned holes thru the distributor cap near each of the brass terminals, so I just replace the coil with a stock one that can on the Syclone.

To make it a plug and go type of setup, Make sure you buy the MSD direct plug inwire harness for GM app.

Now on to the diff types. The break down is like this.

MSD 6A - Base unit
6AL - Built-in Rev Control
6T - Circle Track
6BTM - Designed for Turbo or Supercharged Engines. It has a built in timing retard that you can adjust from 0* to 3* per pound of boost up to a maximum of 15*.
6M-2 -Marine Applications
6-Offroad Ignition Control

Re: Is MSD 6a worth it.

I have a 6al. I did make a difference in how it starts (quicker). Hard to say on the idle but my truck has a flaky idle anyway. Truck is coming down for injs and valve adj this weekend.

Thanks Mike at RPM for checking the injs...

Thanks for the input. After I took a ride in Jeremys Sy I was thinking what the difference in out trucks were. His has a great idle. He is using a msd setup I beleave. Dont get me wrong my idle is good. But would like a smother idle and more reliable setup. Looking at a msd distributor too. I have the msd stock replacement coil already.

Let me know how your distributor cap holds up if you keep the MSD coil when you put the MSD6A on. I was using a Conard cap and rotor when it was burning holes thru the cap. TIA

Re: Is MSD 6a worth it.

The big difference for us between an MSD 6A and the 6AL is the fact that with the 6AL you can add a two step rev limiter (for consistent boost launches), with the 6A you cannot. With the Digital 6 you get it all built into one unit.

I actually own both the 6AL and the Digital 6 (got one cheap, used) but so far have only had time to try the 6AL. I can safely say it did absolutely nothing and definitely did not affect my performance at WOT. I think these things were designed to be added to carbureted cars from the 60's and 70's that didn't have a high performance factory ignition system like all fuel injected cars do nowadays. Just my opinion. But I'll probably still install the Digital 6, just to try that two step.

Don't waste your money Gary - I don't have a 6A or 6AL. If you want a smooth idle, get the MSD Pro Billet Distributor (#8367) and Blaster Ignition Coil (#8226). Those two will run you less than $300, I believe. Only use the heavy duty cap/rotor kit...the one with the brass terminals. I'm using RPM Taylor wires and NGK UR6IX Plugs (#7348) Gapped @ .025". You saw it idle like a Lexus, let me know if you need help.

Re: Is MSD 6a worth it.

i use full msd ignition, cap and rotor ,coil and distributor, the cap and rotor have been on there 2 seasons so far,no problems, and the magnacore wires are 3 years old and the plugs are 2 years old.I have had good luck but i know some people have not,but i must say when they mess up they do some weird stuff for sure.

Re: Is MSD 6a worth it.

I run the 6a and coil on a stock cap (autozone replacement) and have not had any problems. As far a performance is concerned?????I have no idea if its helping or not.

Re: Is MSD 6a worth it.

I've recently purchased a Typhoon with lots of goodies (Vortec heads, FMIC, etc.) It also has the MSD 6a (6200) system. It's hesitating a bit at idle, and occasional non-smooth acceleration. I'm wanting to replace the MSD cap and rotor, but am having challenges finding a supplier.

Any help is appreciated with a source and/or part #.
TIA...

Thanks! Found it here: http://store.summitracing.com/egnse...0+4294908171+115+4294906831&Ntk=KeywordSearch

The cool thing, is that the local Checker auto parts will match anyone's price. So all I have to do is bring in the printed page, and they'll order for for me. I guess I'd pay tax, but save on the shipping costs. And they say they'll have it in by 10/2.

Thanks for the tip!
