Intercooler blanket

Not rain on anyone's parade or prevent a making money opportunity; but, I just use stick-on insulation and aluminmum/mastic tape for my upper intercooler. :)

It's just a six

That is what I had before,it really did not look pretty, but it worked just fine.
Only problem w/my old set-up,I could not ice down the intercooler, but now I can just peal open the top & sit a bag of ice on it now.

Well, looks are always an opinion. I think mine looks all right with all the other stuff in the way. Plus, I only insulated the bottom half of mine and it still keeps really cool temps.

Re: Intercooler blanket

OK guys, PTP Turbo Blankets wrote back to me and said that they would be willing to do an insulating blanket for our upper IC's.

It sounds like they want me to do the GP (purchase the units from them), and I would take care of running the GP, shipping, collecting money, etc. I'm willing to go ahead and do the bulk purchase and take care of the shipping, etc.

They will first need an upper IC so that they can give us an estimate. Does anyone out there have an upper IC that they could loan to PTP for a little while? (I sent Storm Trooper a PM about the one he said he has).

Also, since I've never seen a Ty IC, does the cover come off of that IC, or would it require a different blanket be made to go over that cover?

As soon as we have an answer as to whether an IC is available to ship to PTP, I will start another GP thread so that we can get a good count on what is needed.

Thanks,
Rob

I have one that could loan out as a "test mule". The cover on the ty intercoolers is just held on with two sided tape. Therefore, only one design would be required.

That would be great Mike. I'll PM you with their address and contact name.

Re: Intercooler blanket

We have a problem Houston. Seems that GM did things "Ford style" and there ARE differences between sy and ty intercoolers:

IMG_2589.sized.jpg

The position of the filler neck is just over an inch closer to the engine on a sy vs. a ty. From the base of the filler neck to the right edge of the IC, it measures 1 3/16 of an inch on my "red headed step child" (sy IC) and 2 1/4 on my ty one. The distance from the front to the back of the filler neck is the same as is the locations of the inlet and outlet on the back. I was going to ship out my high visibility red one so that it didn't get lost so easily. I wouldn't *think* that I need to ship both but that has already gotten me in trouble once already. Rob please LMK if I need to ship both. Good thing that I have lots of parts laying around...

EDIT: It looks like this might have been a manufacturing oversight. The hole for the filler neck got installed referenced from the wrong side would be my guess (the distance from the edge is a mirror image). I wonder how many "reversed" filler neck intercoolers are out there... On my truck, the filler neck is like my spare red IC above. Anyone who wants to get a blanket will have to mention which side the filler neck favors on their truck.

Wow, thanks for that catch Mike.... I bet you're exactly right - it was a mistake during manufacturing/assembly - my Sy has it closer to the engine.
I would think we'd better ship both of them... it sounds like they'd turn things around pretty quickly.
Ouch, it's going to up my buy-in costs on the GP, but that's OK if we have enough participants.

ORrrrrr..... How about we make the opening for the filler neck oblong, so that it encompasses both positions? It would just be a bit of exposed area and would make one universal piece so we don't have to worry about qualifying which IC people have.

Re: Intercooler blanket

Well, I'm probably in for the GP when it happens. I had some reflective stuff on the bottom of my IC before, and know it's worth doing. This just looks better.

That would certainly make it a universal fit but I dunno if folks would want to have a big "Mike & Ike" opening on the top. Personally I wouldn't mind it since the business end is on the bottom. What is everyone's thought's on Rob's idea? If everyone is cool with it, I will just ship out one IC instead of both of them. BTW, you can put me down for one too :).

An oblong opening would not bother me. My concern is that you are already risking the loss of one hard to find SyTy part. Why send both and risk losing 2 CACs when all that needs to be done is a larger hole in the blanket.
