soon as I get my head bolts I will install my heads. I have never done this so HELP!!!
How do I clean the block, prep, and install the heads. I can use any help. I will be using the arp head bolts and victor gaskets with the l35 heads. Thanks.

BTW is there a driver and passanger side? on a quick look they look the same or am I missing something? Thanks

I'm trying to ask around to get some exact ideas for you buddy, hang tight. I went and looked at my stock heads and they look the same, are your casting numbers on your heads the same as each other?

EDIT: from what I could gather, the haeds are the same, doesn't matter which side you put them on. Biggest difference I guess is if they don't have acc. holes, then you would wan those on the front.

Just clean the block really well, make sure to plug all the holes as to not get stuff in them and take something like 100-200 grit sand paper and get all the old gasket material off.

Hopefully someone can chime in and confirm all this, but that's what I came up with.

thanks. The holes are the same on both heads. One side has 2 holes and the other has 3. either way the same end up as I flip them around. I tried carb cleaner but the old gasket imprint is still there. I just dont want to take off any block material and mess with the surface.

Retorque them are a PITA. I've been there.
I'll will never get Victor gaskets again.
If you got the extramoney burning in your pocket after x-mas go with Cometics you dont need retorque them.

seriously, i never retorqued any of the heads, i once checked it on my 1k engine which needed to come apart anyway, and it still was the same.
so **** it, not going to take those Damn manifolds off with the engine still in the truck.

Well, I torqued my heads up to specified Nm and when I retourqed them after getting the motor warm there where in my opinion quite a bit more to give them.

Yes the manifolds are so locked in so you have to tear down alot of parts just to get them out...

When i installed my l35 and din't even bother to retorque them. I used ARP head bolts and arp lube. Still going strong. There's no way i'm going to take off the manifolds once they are installed.

I did the same exact thing to my motor, I retorqued them after a few heat cycles and found they were the same, but I'd rather be safe and retorque them, what is your casting # on your heads, and which arp head stud did you use? To remove the old gasket I used a little craftsman gasket scraper, it worked great, removed all the excess gasket off

Installing L35's ported with 2.02, 1.60's, Roller rockers, new pushrods, and rpm covers. Using victors and arp headbolts.

where do I get the head bolt lube?? someone said I can just use oil?? Is the lube better. Looks like there is threadlock in the threads. I will get a tap to clean them but what should I use. I will be installing my heads tomorow.

Yeah me too
They are not torque to yield Just go to 80fpt in sequence You can split it #1st torque @ 40
MAKE SURE YOU PUT MOLY LUBE UNDER THE HEAD OF THE BOLT,
this prevents scoring of the head by the dry bolt.
If you have to, use Lucas gear oil if you cannot find MOLY first.

Yes you still need to torque them in incraments but with the ARP bolts I used (233-3701) it tells you to (pre season) the bolt stretch by tightening them and loosening them (cycling them). You may be using a different part number and not need to cycle them.

same set I have. it says use assembly lube or thread sealer. Help I want to install my heads tomorow. it says moly lube...will any moly grease work?
