Installation of Brandon's HD Propshaft

I have a question about the installation of the propshaft. I took the shaft around to this mechanic this morning (8 AM est on the 22nd) to do what I thought would be a simple swap of the parts. To my suprise I get a call from him at my job saying it was the wrong piece and that it wouldn't fit.. :evil: ..I went to see and sure enough the way he was trying didn't fit because of the screw/bolt on the end near the front of the truck. Now I think he may have been tying to install it backwards...I didn't look myself I was to panicked. Well I just got in tonight (2:30AM 4-23) and thought to look at the shaft myself again before posting a question in the forum. Anyway

:eek: The two ends of the shaft look identical exepct one end looks like it would fit over the bolt but it's at the opposite end of the shaft in comparison to the original that was in there. Was it being installed incorrectly?

:roll: examples of what I'm trying to convey:

original= skinny end up front w/part that would clear bolt (shaft extends forward)

or

Brandon's= fat end up front w/part that would clear bolt (shaft extends backward)

Basically should the shaft extend from the front to the rear (like Brandon's which I'm looking at now) or from the rear to the front (like I think the guy was trying to show me earlier)?

It would make sense to me for it to extend from the front to the rear like Brandon's but I didn't look to see what kind of connection was needed in the rear...but I would have thought (now I'm not so sure) that if it was that simple this so called mechanic would have just turned it around, but maybe some mystic force led him to belive the shaft was supposed to extend forward. please give me some advice.

P.S. Very good customer service from Brandon...I would definitely recommend him and his product :D

Well I hate to bust your bubble but, the bolt pattern is different for the front and rear so, it can only go in one way :wink: ... The flange that bolts to the front differential should have the holes about 2 7/8" apart on center. On the rear flange, they are 2 1/2" apart on center. If your shaft is anything like mine, (I don't have Brandon's) it extends from the rear to the front. HTH

Let me check with the builder to see what's going on with the fit issue. It's becoming extremely hard to find the correct flanges nowadays, and I've had suspicion that the builder is throwing things together without thinking. If your shaft is funky and doesn't fit, give me an email at bbunting@nautilussys.com (yahoo.com email got flooded out) and we'll make things right.

Until this issue is resolved I won't be taking orders for the shafts anymore...

Ohhhhhhhhhh mannnnnn. :cry: :cry: I was gonna order one in a week or two. durnit...

Lemme know if things get straightened out as Id like to have one of those cause I wince every time I launch in anticipation of myclone spitting out the front drive shaft (or worse.. flinging it through the trans case :eek: )

It won't be very long of a delay. I just want to make sure that I have some control over the quality of a product that I provide. I'm used to providing extremely tight tolerances when I get stuff made. It infuriates me when people can't make items with relatively loose tolerances (such as a driveshaft) correctly. I'll keep everyone posted.

hey brandon and mike thanks for the help....could you take a picture of how the ends are supposed to look? I will take pics of the shaft I got tonight and post them hopefully tonight.

Not to take any business away from Brandon, as he was extremely helpful and I didn't even buy anything... Here's an email Al Dustan sent me when I asked him about propshafts...

Well dynotech will rebuild your stock shaft and re balance it for around 175-200.00, this will give you a new boot kit and redo the bearings in there. About a new shaft, I am not sure about the other shafts out there but I have heard of some vibration problems with them. My new shaft is made by dynotech and is 100% vibration free, much much stronger than stock and is also a better design. There is no cv boot joint anymore that will tear over time on the new shaft, this joint is just a very bad design and will always need to be worked on no matter what shaft you go with. The price on the new shaft should be around 500.00-550.00, I should know the exact price today or tomorrow. If you have anymore questions please email or call. Thank you.
