what year should i get?

Either one, doesn't matter. 92 or 93.

what should i look out for?

Trucks that are beat to crap. The usual used car stuff.

what common problems am i going to run into with the ty?

Everything. Pretty much everything will break on it at some time. You must have very good patients and a deep pocket to play the Sy/Ty game.

can it be used as a daily driver so long as im not launching/power breaking all the time?

Yes, but it makes your last question even worse. If you get a low mileage truck, I don't think it'd be too bad, but I'd still get something else for a daily driver if I were you.

what are some good tuners?

You need to buy a truck and get it running right before you worry about tuning. 99% of Sy/Ty's on the market, unless you buy it from an enthusiast, and even if you do, they will definatelly have some issues that need to be worked out before you start going nuts.

and any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Just keep the A4! Sy/Ty's are fun, but you WILL have problems and you will have stuff that breaks. It WILL NOT always run perfect, and you will have to mess with it to make it run consistantly good. However, when they are running good, they ROCK! How old are you if I may ask?

A search for "buyers guide" will bring up a lot of old threads that have lots of good advice for (potential) new owners. The best advice is probably still to have an owner in the area check it out for/with you. There are many little things that you only pick up on after being around them for a while. We're a fairly small community, so there's usually someone willing to help out if it'll save someone a lot of trouble (and probablly avoid some SyTy-bashing when they can't get it to work right). If you're unable to get an experienced local, regular 4x4 S-truck experience will help a lot (as that's mostly what SyTy's are), as will lots and lots and lots of reading here. Once you've read every SyTy-related webpage you've found, go back and read them all again. =)

They were made in two years either 1992 or 1993, the 1993 have all leather seats and the 1992's don't, watch who you buy it from, ask as many questions as you possibly can about the Ty before you consider getting it, go as far as if it has ever been smoked it...believe it or not it does make a difference, from what I have seen and watched Ted go through you will basically run into a problem here and there. You could use it as a daily driver, but it wouldn't hurt to have something else to drive, like someone already said, they do break down, and it may take longer than what you think to fix it so it would always be wise to have another vehical around to drive. Ted has a blazer that he always drove around when the ty wasn't up and running, or when he was working on it. (All of this information that I gave to you was taught to me by Ted!! I am extremly proud of myself that I was able to use the information I have learned from him and tell you about it! I know I missed somethings but at least you get the main point!)

The tranny breaker
Depends on what you're planning on doing with it. I've had my engine + tranny rebuilt. Spent about 3 times the price of the truck in in upgrade / tuning parts 8) . So you should really try and TEST the car really hard. I never read the syty FAQ, If I had I would have saved LOTS of money..

I would go for a rebuilt engine with TRW Pistons and Eagle-H rods just in case. And the necessary fuel upgrades. Otherwise is stock quite good, you never know how "good" the upgrades have been worked on. Can be some shitty memcal or a used / worn out upgrade turbo put on the truck..

A good advice also with these trucks. If something gets broken. Always replace it with something better than stock / or what was mounted there. If for instance your front prop-shaft keeps breaking .. never buy a stocker again..

I've used my truck as a transportation (and ofcourse kicking ass) vehicle for 8 months. Been running great (but then I started using 25 psi of boost and the tranny gave up hehe).

I drove with it daily around 70 miles. Commuting.. It's a dream to drive. No problem with the passings :) Lots of room for the stereo also. Now Iäm currently changing exhaust headers. Hope this post helps you.

don' the 92s have typhoon on the headrest?

yep.

the 93's also have the roof console inside, and the roof rack tube shape is a little different, and the writing in the rear hatch lock is different, there are tons of little things.
