Re: Ignition Timing - Need Help!

Did you check your breaks? Also I believe a VAC leak could cause you to not be able to hold boost but I could be wrong. Did you spary for VAC leaks?

Re: Ignition Timing - Need Help!

Im going to try to check everything again over the weekend. The majority of the time i have had the truck ive been cleaning it up so i have very little road time with it to get a feel for what it should be like. I haven t checked the balancer yet but i will. wish me luck! hope to have some pics up soon too.

UPDATE!!!!

I got the fan shroud off, got the fan off and the belt off and found the timing mark to the left when you look at it from the top. Painted it white =P I put it all back together, unplugged the tan wire, and threw the timing light back on it. Turns out, the mark doesn't jump around. I don't know why I thought it was the first few times...maybe the lighting? I dont know. Anyway, the timing is 6 degrees advanced. I'm going back out right now to change it to 0. How would advancing the timing affect the way the truck runs though? Im hoping it runs better at 0. Here are the pics I have so far...

Re: Ignition Timing - Need Help!

after rereading your post and looking at your pics, i think some of you problems may not only be ignition related, but you still have the 14 year old hard plastic vacuum lines on there. Those things crack and leak, messing your idle up along with a million other problems, from performance to idle. Get some silicole vacuume hose and redo all those lines and i'd imagine your idle will be better. Something may be cracked.

Some of the pics are of when I first got the truck, as I am taking it apart. The pics of it complete show the all new vacuum lines...or maybe not so much because they are run so you can't see them anymore =P But...maybe I need to redo it over again because I still have problems?...

The timing has been set to 0, instead of 6 degrees advance. The fuel pressure has been set to 42 psi static (with no vacuum line hooked up), instead of 58 psi static. wtf?

Problems...
The truck still has a bad idle and is now slower and less powerful then before I changed it to the correct settings. The idle smooths out to almost perfect with the tan wire disconnected. As soon as you plug the tan wire in, the idle chunks along and the tach bounces maybe 20-50 rpm in the 600 rpm range. My dads van has the same motor and it idles perfect with 200k miles on it =( !!!!!!!

Can anyone verify that 42psi is the correct fuel pressure? this sucks =(

Thanks guys.

Re: Ignition Timing - Need Help!

ok so I looked at some info in the vault and found a bunch of stuff I didnt see before. I forgot the last step of the timing was resetting the computer. I also found the fuel pressure listed as 46 psi and not 42. The truck rips. I think it finally runs like it was supposed to. It also has the ATR 3" cat back so im not sure how much that adds, but its like a completly diffrerent vehicle. This thing is an animal =P Thanks guys for all the help.

Re: Ignition Timing - Need Help!

i don't think it had anything to do with the fp. but perhaps reseting the ECM is what was needed...it may have had some stored codes you had thrown. Didn't mention it as i always remove batter cable anyway when messing with stuff...glad ya got it working.

ive heard the 90s gm distributers crap out the bushings in them causing slop, and indeed, when we pulle dmy moor out, there was some slop, so keep that in mind for future thought when you pull that 93k mile motor. mine ran fine aside form a slightly rough idle, found a bent rod when we opened it.

I am thinking you are probably right. The engine makes some pretty loud mechanical noise when you listen to it from underneath on idle. The guy I bought it from kept warning me about raising the boost cause I will blow the motor up. Im guessing he did something dumb and sold me a motor thats about to blow up. Heh. Either way, when I rebuild the motor I will check that out and maybe get an MSD distrubutor or something. I'll proceed to have my fun with it untill it blows up =P

Re: Ignition Timing - Need Help!

Chain stretch is no joke. Ide bet that chain is looose w/90 some thou. on the truck. With some finesse, you can change it out, just watch the lip seal on the pan gasket. Lots of work, but you would feel the diff. immediately. just install it right!
