IAC - replace or repair?

Hi,

I have been advised to try and repair my IAC, but I don't know what it looks like and what it will involve.

It is under the throttle body right? Has anyone repaired theirs? How do you go about it?

Has anyone got a pic and a rough idea of how much to pay for a new one, or whether I can use second hand ones or what?

thanks,

Mark

Re: IAC - replace or repair?

They unscrew, and have a thin gasket. Remove it, and the throttle body and clean out the passages. Get some O2 sensor safe carb/throttle body cleaner and go to town. Otherwise I dont think an IAC itself is serviceable.

Re: IAC - replace or repair?

The IAC is a "electric-step-motor" seems hard to do anything else than clean it unfortunally.
They are quite expensiv :(

IAC error in DTC code, idle is around 800, but DM says it is aiming for 725

Service Engine Soon light comes on intermittently from 0 - 100 mph.

How much is "expensive"?

£100  Booooooooooooo.

Ebay? Where can I get them from? I figure if I am going to play around and there is any doubt I may as well just replace it.

My old intercooler was leaking a small amount of coolant - would that clog things up? I am going to replace it with Wallers larger IC.

A vacuum leak can cause the same problem ;) .

Re: IAC - replace or repair?

new silicone hoses all around though. Did a thorough check and it seemed ok. I have a vacuum test kit so I guess I can have a look at that at some point.

Is that the right part though?

thanks :)

Re: IAC - replace or repair?

I picked up mine for 35$ USD from napa auto. The best thing would be to remove the TB and clean it out with carb cleaner. Be carfull not to bend the rod on the IAC.

Reeeaaalllyyy! I didnt know that. I had this smae problem a month or so ago. I replaced mine and havent had the CEL since but I do still have start up problems. Ild say just replace the thing. Its worth it to know its not it. After looking for a VAC leak ofcourse.

Re: IAC - replace or repair?

Its more likely that you have dirty passages than a faulty IAC. You better check into it before buying the part so your not just wasting time and money on something you dont need.

usually iac failure will cause a long hard start. you would have to pump the gas to help aid startup.

This is what i do to keep it alive for the first few minutes. I have the same IAC error code too. Should i just try to clean the passages and valve? In the chilton's manual it says if you use an IAC after it's already been used once, you have to get some device to reset the coil/spring on it. Is this true?

Re: IAC - replace or repair?

I am going to do both - clean the trhottle body and replace the IAC just to be doubly sure.

It starts fine although it takes a few turns to get going but I think I have a problem with the fuel pump so a 255 is going in anyway.

thanks for all the input guys :)

Re: IAC - replace or repair?

Just get a can of "starting Fluid" either, crank the motor, get it to operating temp, spray fluid at each point that a vacume hose connects to anything, both initial and terminal ends as well as around any gasket or sensor (egr) that is attached to any part of the intake system, manifold etc. When the engine idle speed picks up, narrow it down and youve fornd your vacume leak. From there on it's a hose replacement or wrench bend.

Re: IAC - replace or repair?

Took mine out last night and spray it with Seafoam cleaner. It's running much better today,
