I need some serious HELP!

My friend has a Typhoon in which installed brand new motor about year ago. Only mod to it was a 412 cam other than that all stock. He just started loosing power about 2 weeks ago and now the car makes no power.

No boost either. Looked over all vac lines, all hoses for turbo no issues. So the turbo has alot of miles on it. So local guy Crusader8 has a stock turbo off his truck that we could use to see if this is the problem. Installed does the same thing. (now the old turbo had some battle wounds on the turbine) So i install new cap and rotor and run it still same issue.

Truck idles smooth, as soon as you start bring up the rpm 2,000 to 2,500 it starts sputtering and lossing power. Foot brake it no boost builds and the truck just dogs out like your choking it. He did have a code last night for 02 being too rich, i cleared it was thinking if it is not boosting it will be rich.

Sound like all the injectors are working! I do have a diacom hooked up to the truck and not sure what i should be looking for to solve his problems. The chip is a hypertech chip "no clue what type". I do have an STG Chip but had problem with when we tried to install couple months ago and we just left the old chip in the truck.

Anyone be able to test or look over the stg for us to make sure that their is no problems with it.
--------These problems are happening with the Hypertech Chip --------- The other chip we couldn't get to work at all.

Please help me! Shit i got a 10 sec typhoon soon but know nothing about stock trucks anymore.

whats the fuel pressure at maybe the Reg took a crap?? if its truly running rich that could explain the popping and the not being able to build much boost.....

Mine did the exact same thing last year. I put a new fuel pump in and it seemed to fix it, but I still do get the o2 rich code once and a while, still am gonna change the cat soon hoipefully.

That was one of my thoughts but i turn down the fuel pres. and it still does it and there is no fuel in the vac line. It doesn't pop or anything like that but if you grab the throttle under the hood and rev it up the motor comes up then it hits that spot and just starts to shake or sputter like it was missing or something. If you hold the throtle down it just like it bogs right down no pick up in the throttle response.

No codes. Could 02 sensor be bad but wouldn't casue no boost. Could one of the sensors be bad map, tps, or maybe bad ECM. I do have a spare ecm if i want to try that direction.
I was gonna pull the plug 2 morrow and see what they look like and if any signs of anything.

Truck has new 255 liter pump installed just before motor(i did it) and all new exhaust 3 inch high flow cat, 3 inch muffler only thing not replaced was downpipe.

Pulling my hair out!

oh yeah, I also changed the o2 sensor, but again, dont know if it helped or not. Since the problem I changed the pump, o2 sensor, pump relay, and the problem seems to be gone for now.

I'm betting on a clogged catalytic converter. Had the same problem with my truck Hollowed out the cat and it was good to go!

Well if this wasn't all replaced right after the motor build i would agree with you! I sold him a 2,000 mile 3" high flow cat, he bought new 3" muffler and had all new piping from downpipe to tail replaced. ""I'm not saying that it might not be the problem but unless a small squirrel climbed in there and got suck"" of course it would smell horrible.

If it was the 02 it would still make boost! It would just run reallt crappy.

Same here on the cat vote.My truck did not build boost when my cat was clogged and had no power after 2k rpm. we opened the dump and problem was gone.

Hey Jeff,

So if you brought rpm to 2,000-2,500 try to take off it had no power did the motor shake and sputter like as you bring the engine rpm's up that high. I see some black smoke come out the exhaust when we rev it up.

Like i said gonna pull plugs and see what they look like, and then maybe on the ideal of the cat being clogged even though it is a 3" high flow after market unit.

Re: I need some serious HELP!

If you are getting spent fuel haze from the exhaust, I would venture to say the cat is NOT clogged. Either the engine is getting too much fuel OR not enough air. I just bought a Sy with similar symptoms....if I pinpoint the problem, I will inform you and I will be watching this thread to see if you beat me to the solution.

Re: I need some serious HELP!

You can tell if a exhaust is restricted pretty easily by hooking up a vacume gauge and then run the motor at 2-3 thousand rpm for 30 seconds or a minuet and if the exhaust is clogged it will show it on the gauge as lower vacume than normal it should actually start dropping off the more you hit the throttle if it is clogged.

Re: I need some serious HELP!

im agreeing with a previous poster if the truck was ran rich for quite some time and not on a good tune that could cause the Cat to heat up and melt itself thus causing the clog

Well the turbo definitely ate something but not recently, the fins were pretty bent over but not the issue (jims crusaders8 turbo in place but still not working) so tonight going to pull a few plugs and if they look ok then try different map and if that doesn't work unbolt flange on turbo and start and see if it builds boost if so cat is the problem.

Re: I need some serious HELP!

I gonna go with a cracked plug or burnt plug wires. My truck had these exact symptoms and would've rather tripped all over itself instead of build boost. I found a burnt through plug wire. Replaced them with new Taylors and it runs like a champ.

....and yes, ironically enough, it idled well enough that I never suspected it and didn't do anything terrible unless it was under load. Just throwin ideas out there. Good luck.
