I just got spanked. Z28. Can we run from 70mph?

I want to throw up. I knew I shouldnt have done it, but my foot acted on its own without my brains permission. I was on JTB highway and I was coming around a 98/99? Z28 at about 65 to 70 with no intention of provoking a race. Well he jumps up on my butt and slingshots me. Then drops back and when I get next to him at about 70mph he gooses it and I hammer down, well......he walked away from me, easily. That just flat out hurt my pride. Can we be built enough to run competitively from 70mph? Or am I gonna have to drop a V8 in this thing. The way he ran I'm wondering if I could have even taken him from a standstill. Would a set of 70# injectors, 70turbo and a chip make a big enough difference to maybe take this guy from 70mph?

Right now I'm bored 30 over with a 3500 stall everything else is stock, I dont have 3k at the moment to drop, whats my next step in getting me competitive with this Z28, as I will be gunning for him as soon as possible. Or are we strictly a 0-60 breed. I just bought my second house, so when my first house sells I can spend some more "jack" but that might take a few months. Until then, I got to do the cheap things to be conservatively smart.

You got spanked because:

Your stock Syclone is not made to run from 70 to 150 like the z28.
Your stock Syclone is not aerodynamic like the Z28.
Your stock Syclone works best from 0 - 60 mph.

The Z28 has the LS1 engine.
The Z28 can easily be made to do low 12's.

Points to consider:

Read up on your competition.
Read up on what some guys do to go fast. It's not dumping in a PT70, injectors and chip. It's a lot more then that which requires mucho dinero and a lot of time tuning.

Once you do all that then go play with the Z28 and the rest of them.

I know I'm destined to get flamed, and someone will say, do a search for what everyones doing. well I have, but I'm doin ALOT of reading and I'm seeing that alot of info is being either contested or updated and I'm not sure if I'm getting the latest info. Some are saying port and match port, but others are saying you dont need to because its turbo is too much for any porting to have an effect on. I cant count the preferences of air2air against liquidcooling and one over the other. And it seems that-that isnt as major of a power increaser over a chip or injectors. Seems most of what I'm reading is injector/turbo/chip/stall/head installations is most important. I havent seen anything yet that mentions anyone with these complete mods contending at anything other than standstill. One thing I think I havent seen is a simplified checklist of things that can be done to a syclone from stock up build from step one. Maybe I'll do this. I was just hoping a few people would throw up their own experiences with mod accomplishments that put them into a competitive league in a highway run. But my question still hasnt been answered........can we be competitive at 65 or 70, or is that a goal I should put out of my mind.

This is just an "up to this date" conversation on progress we've made in performance, if I dont ask these questions, this forum becomes a read only and search forum on old posts.

I think you missed his point. Pick up Hot Rod or some magazine or something or compare timeslips for other cars will you see that SyTys are awsome out out of the hole and not as well from a roll.

Go look at the 12 sec check list that would be a start. Isnt it on Sportmachines?

Now if you want to spend a crap load, 10K, then you should have a truck that would take a lot from a roll, but still dont expect much after 100+ its just not gonna happen.

if you dont think your sy is fast i will give you 5gs and you can go get a used 98 ls1. 5gs is a good down payment and then you could have a car that is faster on the top end. or you could tune your sy and get it to run 12s with a chip, and stop whining

Forced to by choice
With a 2.4 60' and staying in 3rd gear I ran a 13.8 @ 106 in my 00 Z28 M6.

If he's stock you should have a way bigger chance from a stop seeing you can get your 60's to about 1.8 easy. But if you go from anything faster then a 30mph roll the Z28 should eat ya, I'm not saying it will always, but if it has a good driver the Z should win, that is if your both stock.


You gotta remember there are quite a few ls1 cars in the high 12's very clost to stock.. Have fun :D

Thats awsome, I didnt see that in any of my searches. Is there one of these spread sheets that makes a checklist of something like.......
suggestions.....

1. replace metal lines with this kind of hose.
2. rewire intercooler pump.
3. remove this.
4. remove that.
5. adjust this.
6. chip (waller/green)

So we dont have to scavenge each idea individually from a search?

Im not whining about not being fast at 70, I just havent seen anyone mention performance at that point, or what our potential is. Otherwise I'll just refuse any highway race and put it out of mind.

That spreadsheet is nice.

Ever wonder why the call syclones and typhoons "stop light warriors" and not highway warriors? Our trurks are dominate 0-60 and 1/4 mile. That's why lightings wanna run ya from a roll.

I never tried a LS1 from 70,but from 30-50 roll I can pull one pretty good.
Of course my truck is not stock,and with a stock turbo I'd never race anything from highway speeds.

dude I think you need to do some tuning make sure you have the proven parts (conrad,ur5, taylors) also if you have your stock metal IC lines get rid of them and put some heater hose and shurflo,jabsco or johnson pump. definately a high flow fuel pump with a afpr

I have raced a fixed up late Z28 with slicks and he passed by me up until 90mph on my typhoon :eek:

and I also took on a firebird on the freeway I kept up to 110mph all on a stock turbo

TUNING is the main thing here though spend like $200 and you will toast a Z28 from a roll if you cant afford an ultimate chip buy the atr chip i heard its as close as you can get to the ultimate definately dont buy the bell chip

im taking notes on what your sayin. when mentioning certain items can you be a bit more specific, that way it saves me a little while doin a search. like ur5s and conrads and taylors, i dont know what these things are :eek: and im bone stock, i do still have the metal IC lines, tomorrow i'll work on replacing them with hose.

Im doing as much searching as i can spend in the next 3 hours and putting together a total checklist which i havent found anywhere. i'll submit it for everyones approval when im done.

A simple way to check out the top end or roll on speed of a car is to look at its 1/4 mile mph.

I think ls1's usually run 104-107mph trap (correct me if I am wrong, I don't totally follow them)

So you will need to best those MPH in the 1/4 mile. Most stock sy don't hit 100mph, so as you can see your toast. A well tuned Sy can run mid 12's usually can hit 105-106 mph with a stock turbo, so that put you neck & neck with a stock LS1 or a 50/50 theorectical chance. To really beat one you going to bigger turbo, injectors and perhaps a bigger stall converter (depending on how big of a turbo you choose) I think you can expect with PTE 52, with 50lbs injector and a ultimate chip with a stock motor/cam/heads have run traps of 112mph (assuming its tuned and running properly)

i think with a few bucks your truck could beat a stock z-28 from a 70 roll no problem, they are not that fast. the only problem is that the few mods required to do so are expensive.

Dont forget, these bricks have to move a LOT of air at the top end. And the more the engines are trying to push, the more heat your building up. So make sure you consider a better cooling system.

Also as I understand, a better stall, means quicker boost. I lag like hell at 70 but once it builds up it pulls ok.
