Perhaps folks like this were deprived during their adolesence of performance vehicles and now in adulthood with excess funds at their disposal, this becomes their way of achieving ownership while at the same time, in some regard, getting even with the world at large. Just doesn't make sense!!

My guess is he wouldn't; the OP already tried. It appears some folks have so much free capital on hand that they spend it without forethought. 4 years ago, my wife and I attempted to buy a home that was unoccupied on 6 acres that fronted a 4 lane 1/2 mile from our home and was going downhill. I finally tracked down the owner who informed me I would never have enough money to buy the place. Later, I found out he owns a 300 unit apartment complex outside Fort Campbell, he manages building contracts on the installation, owns over 500 acres of prime real estate around town, raises cattle and has numerous rental properties.. He is very, very grumpy and unhappy in his disposition. Last year, he suffered a stroke and is now paralyzed.

This guy that owns these vehicles reminds me of the guy here in Clarksville. I may never have enough money to buy anything he has but one day, he will move on and all his possessions will stay behind. I never understood why people are so greedy with excess they don't need and will likely never use, when someone else could use it :dunno:

the funny part is that when he dies the family will sell everything he worked so hard for

There is a guy that in New Bern, NC that is just like this. He has a shop on Trent Rd. and out back there are a lot of old muscle cars just rotting away. He goes to swap meets all the time buying parts, but not installing or repairing anything. He has a 70 LS6 Chevelle that has rusted away. 69 Vette, rusted through. AND he won't pay his mechanics squat. haha.

There must be a hoarding type of psychology behind this. It happens a lot. People get fixated on some future state of having all these cars done "one day". But if you don't start working on a car to completion it will never happen. It will be "one day" until you die or are no longer able to do good work anymore. Crawling around under cars wrenching gets harder over time!

It's almost like the dream of "one day" doing something big (having a whole collection) is more important than actually doing something smaller today (like getting one car properly done for real).

What a waste of vehicles sitting there. There is a guy in these parts who collects MOPARS like that. Wont sell or do anything with them but let them sit & rot.

Also depends on the person, too...my dad's gonna be 67 years old this coming June and he's been working on cars since he was 9 years old building hot rods with his dad. He was a mechanic in the Army, retired after 21 years and went right to work as a mechanic for the post office. He started there in 1984 and doesn't show any signs of wanting to retire anytime soon. He had an accident with his table saw in 2000 that almost severed 7 of his fingers. After the surgery and rehabilitation, he was right back at it, although his manual dexterity did suffer a bit. The therapist said he did great in therapy because of his lifetime of turning wrenches. His grip strength with just his thumb, pointer finger, and middle finger was 2 times stronger than a person's grip with all 4 fingers and the thumb!

That sounds a lot like me... and I hoard things too.

The cars I bought I purchased because they were "once in a lifetime" purchases in my head. Now I cant decide which one to get in the shop first ... and I buy parts for every one ; not just for one. Its weird. The good thing, is over time I learn a lot more , and make changes to my builds before the parts get put on :) ---

Here is my take on this:
* The guy is probably not very intelligent.
* He probably did inherit some money as saving money and actually having a surplus of cash is, in all likelihood, beyond his mental capacity.
* He probably did not inherit much money otherwise they wouldn't be sitting on someone else's property.
* If he wants to collect cars he should have spent his money on some land and put up a pole building so that he has somewhere to store them.
* These will sit for a long time. The metal will rust and the sun will make the cladding so brittle that it will be useless. They will be worth nothing and will eventually be scraped.

People having cars "stored" in their backyard is more common than you think, I can thing of several cars that are worth quite a bit of money sitting, when he passes there will be a auction and the cars will sell cheap

Ive been to auctions where deceased was a "car guy" and stuff was selling for pennies on the dollar

www.carsinbarns.com is the perfect example

Fortunately, some "collectors" still do it right.  And this is the "cheap" section.

What do you want me to say? You own a camera, you took some pics of some ty's/sy's in a field. I don't see no callaway or gnx. So no apology. As I figured there's no callaway or gnx. You knowledge of vehicles is as cloudy as the quality of your pics. Have a nice day. Go check your ego at the toys r us store.
