Howling turbo

I am a newbie to the Typhoon world. I am in Tokyo and just bought a 92 Typhoon, for a good price. It has very loud howling noise which seems to be coming from the turbo, only when there is any boost. It almost sounds like a siren. I removed the intake hoses and check the turbo impaler. There appear to be very little side to side play and no in/out play. The main inlet hose was very dirty with oil and debris caked on inside. Debris seems to have come from the broken end of the filter-to-turbo piping.
The in-dash gauge reads about -10 at idle and the noise start any where above 0. I searched the archives but found no similar noise or symptoms. I fear bits of the piping broke off and damaged the impaler. Does this seem plausible? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. BTW there a few good ones left over here.

It's never enough
Mine was screaming pretty good. Couldn't quite figure it out until I pulled the turbo off only to see that the nut holding the turbine wheel was off and actually rotating inside the housing along with the blade.

Don't know what to tell you really. Maybe take a scope/mirror to view the inlet of the turbo. ???

A turbo is a very delicate peace it will not tolerate trash. If it is making screeching noises
it’s on it’s way out. Keep it clean oil and air it will last for years and years.

A loose hose connection on the TURBO TO IC or IC TO THROTTLE BODY connection can also make a howling noise. Make sure the hoses are seated properly, over the 'lip' and the clamps are tightened.

Re: Howling turbo

Yeah, I know I brought this back from the dead........but I did search.

My turbo has made this same noise since I got it. To me it sounds very much like the supercharger whine you hear from the Lightnings or Terminator Mustangs(Cobras). My 3 year old daughter is always asking me to "make the fire truck noise". So it could also be described as a siren noise

I can see that one of the fins on the inlet side of the turbo is folded over. But only 1. No unusual play on the turbine as far as I can tell. It still seems to boost just fine. Are these turbos supposed to have a whistle to them just like all the other turbos I have heard?

I was just curious if anyone who posted on this earlier ever came up with a conclusive answer.

Re: Howling turbo

My stage 3 howls also but only at 2-3 psi then it goes away. It's very loud when the exhaust is uncapped.
I checked for play or any bent or unusual wear on the turbo and cant find anything wrong.....Seems to boost up fine for the last 2 years.

If it spools up like it should then I wouldn't worry about it too much...
