How Much Does it Cost?

Re: How Much Does it Cost?

Do some research and make sure that the shop you take it to doesn't most of or not all of their business in the insurance world. Most of the time they will bid it high because they don't want to do it.

Re: How Much Does it Cost?

the problem with 99% of 10k paint jobs is..
they aren't worth what they charge by a long shot.
why??

very few strip the whole truck to metal
95% dont remove all the parts or glass
cladding is not gone over - its just sanded and primed like the rest of the truck.
( believe me the most time consuming thing about our trucks is the many, many times to sand and prime the cladding to actually be flat- they are so horrible factory it takes a lot more then the body)
door jambs - maybe
inside doors -under tailgate maybe
fix cladding that will last- doubtful
put everything on exactly as factory- almost never happens
paint the 2 tone grill on 92-nope
replace all the rubber even under hood - nope
replacing all the glass- no
strip everything out of your truck- no
wiper arms, mirrors, antenna -all trim redone - negative

for 10k that shit better be rotisserie painted on the bottom of the body + all the above with all ppg paints for starters

A lot of these guys are all right about this. Does it make any sense to dump this much money into these trucks, obviously no, but thats not why we do it. It doesn't make any sense to put any money into these trucks. You need to look at your long term goals for the truck and figure out it's plans. It comes down to how long you want to keep it and strong the sentimental value is. If it's not there then do like some people said and just pick a nicer truck and sell yours to recoup the loss. If its something that you plan on keeping for a long time then by all means go for it and enjoy the truck whether you keep it stock or go full build it's going to look outstanding. Just do research on the shop, see there finished work, in person, and get multiple quotes.

Getting a Typhoon is a big deal to those who appreciate them. Is spending that kind of money on a paint job really going to make it a better experience? Focus on making it run as best as possible. Clean it up as best as possible. It's very easy to enjoy owning one of these. It sounds like you bought a beater. Take it for what it is. It's a Typhoon! Hell yeah!

My 92 Ty. You know. The junk year nobody wants to own. Was stripped to bare metal, glass out. Everything resprayed by the GM dealer. Orig owner made GM pay for it. I paint and have been around car restorations for 40 years. Paint is damn nice and looks factory. In the years shopping for a Ty kept saying one needing paint would be ok as long as the drivetrain was original and overall the truck lived on the west coast. Its a lot of work to paint these trucks period. Glad I didn't have to do a resto. Rather wrench anyday on these over sanding and priming.

Re: How Much Does it Cost?

one problem when doing part of the work yourself- like body work, rust repair, primer- most shops wont take any responsibilities if you bring them a prepped car for them to spray

a legit body shop will stand behind their work- most will have a time/miles warranty on their workmanship. if you get a pop in the paint a year later- they will take care of it- if you bring them a primered car they usualy are fine with spraying it- but imperfections in the paint will be blames on the owners poor prep- or any excuse they can think of.

ive had a few friends do all the work to their own cars and tow them to a body shop to be shot and ended up with problems down the road. unfortunately in the world we live in- finding a decent body shop that is proud of and will stand behind their work is hard to come by

on the other hand if you pull the cladding off and disassemble parts and drop it off to them to do the whole thing- and in 6 months you find a bubble or something youll have a leg to stand on

cheap, fast, good. Pick 2 it wont be the third. 10k for a complete color change is cheap. I Know painters that charge 15k minimum for a paint job, Anybody can spray paint its whats under the paint that counts. 99% of good pint jobs are prep work,

you arent paying for paint your paying for this

thats a 3inch block the entire roof was blocked flat, DP90, metal glaze blocked flat, then primer, then reblocked

Re: How Much Does it Cost?

There seems to be a lot of different info thrown around on here. Im a bodyman/painter by trade, from collision work, to resprays, to full on custom showcars. Take that for what you will, I guess....

Theres many ways to do a vehicle and if you decide that investing the money into your Ty is worth it, then proceed.

If you want the quarters replaced, fenders replaced, cladding removed, bodywork all gone through, panels matched, primed, painted, cleared, cut and buffed.... well 10k really isn't all that bad. I've done more for less, and done less for more. Anyone worth the money will deliver a job back to you that they would drive themselves. Any painter that gives a shit, will be his own worst critic well above what you'd see.

As far as the process goes, stripping the entire truck to bare metal isn't really always the best option. The factory e-coat surpasses most aftermarket products out there and the heat that is involved in the stripping process can easily warp the steel panels causing more work that was unnecessary to begin with. If you're concerned about the price of things, you need to get an exact breakdown of products used, processes, and reputation (don't ask the shop how awesome they are), check online.

Now as far as doing some of the work yourself, that's fine too to save some money. But when you're talking about the finish of your vehicle, I would leave the repairs to the professionals. Nothing wrong with learning, but let your labor be mostly R&I of cladding, windows, seals, lights, trim, etc etc. That way they can warranty their products and labor against any issues that may arise. If you weld some panels wrong, use shit primer, crap filler, or just plain don't do the repair correctly, it will surely cost you in the long run. I cant tell you how many cars I've received "ready for paint" and had to resurface the entire body to make it straight. It got so bad that I wont even touch a vehicle like that anymore because of the de-laminating issues, paint shrinking, rust popping... I could go on for days.

Moral of the story here is just do some extremely thorough research on whatever shop you choose to bring it to and how their customers were treated/how their work looks. If you were closer Id offer to do it for you.

Re: How Much Does it Cost?

i had a few cars done...

1952 pickup...it was used alright some rot and alot of dents...

7-9K paintjob and show quAlity

just a paintjob without real body work 1K

had my sy done with some body work and cladding 1500

Ty is going to cost me 2500 now. prolly 3 days of welding in it.. complet;e stripped though.. will be show quality.

I dont know why the prices in the USA are almost x 2-3 when it comes to paint jobs, compared to everything else that is almost the same amount cheaper in the usa when it comes to cars and work

the Mexicans have been telling us that for YEARS.

BUT YOUR RIGHT THOUGH -for 10g's it better be flatter, deeper, better than what i had done on mine.
and ill hurt your feelings with mine(painted in a basic garage- no booth) up against any 10 g paint job out there all day long

I'd never pay more than 5k. Unless it's a fram off ant there doing the chassis too. I paid 3500 for my syclone. And it need both front fenders and the tailgate.

Re: How Much Does it Cost?

check your local craigslist listings for retired bodyman or side work jobbers . should be able to get a better than average maaco job for $1250.00 - $ 1500.00 . Believe me i wish i had enough $$$ to pay for the real deal
remove all the cladding show paint job. but i have a good buddy that was willing to do a side job for me for the
cost of supplies and couple hundred dollars in his pocket . I got a sand , primer , sand , color ,clear , sand, polish ,all for $1500.00 . It isn't show quality but a hell of a lot better than fadded 1992 gm paint .

+1 I paid 3500 for a truck awhile back and came out great. . Again I am not trying to make my truck a show truck and will be driving it just for fun but won't pay more then 5k for paint. 10-15K for a paint job in oklahoma is just retarded around here, you could go to the store and a storm come through drop hail all over your ride and your out that money, insurance will only pay for what they say it should cost to repair/ paint so if you drive your truck ect don't waste money on a high dollar paint job that could get tore up by weather, rock chips, just some jackass in a parking lot or even the red neck with a lifted truck and mud tires that only drives on the highway and flings rocks at your car lol.

Re: How Much Does it Cost?

Sorry, been away for a while. Caught up on this thread now and its been rather helpful.

I will say that I don't expect my typhoon to be a show truck. I'd like for it to be a nice looking DD. It does have a list of other issues that i'm slowing crunching away on and the body/paint are towards the bottom of that list. The way I figure, what good is a beautiful truck if it wont run?

Once it's drivable again in the spring I'm going to take it around to a few other places that are geared towards restoring show cars and see what they say. $3000-$4000 would be doable for me and also what I think is reasonable. Considering I'm going to remove the cladding and strip as much as possible before taking it in. And I'll be putting the cladding back on myself. Not sure if I can trust any shops around here with that task. :squint:

But first things first... getting it drivable... :rotf:

Re: How Much Does it Cost?

I didnt get a chance to read this whole thread but i have been in the Custom paint/ Restoration business for a long time now and way to many factors depend on the price

Basically it all boils down to Time+ materials, and how crazy you want to go

You can do a repaint with no jambs, glass in, cheaper clear, but, of course you will get cheaper results, tape lines, lesser solids clear.

You can go crazy when custom painting a car, and taking the time to get not only every ding but WAVE out in a panel is very time consuming, and priming a car 2-3 times ( a gallon +/- ) each time can add up FAST when using high quality stuff. A good high build primer setup can run $400 a gallon for a setup, That doesnt include, taping, masking, sand paper, booth time, ect.

Then you have to factor how much paint you will need, if your doing a Typhoon soup to nuts, jambs, hinges, underside of hood, rad support, Ect, You will need 2 gal of color, and reducer, the more tints in the color the more the price goes up, and again there is a large spectrum of price from budget junk, to high end PPG/ spies/ sikkens/ glasuirt

Then clear setup, again, You can get a $100 cheap setup thats about as clear as piss and has no UV protection and youll be doing it over in a year or two, Or you can get a High solids top of the line setup for 400-500. Yet again you will have to see what panels you are painting, and if you want that dead flat mirror finish, Youll need 4-5 good coats to have enough to Wetsand for the desired look, Factor in another 2 gallons or so of that. And depending on size of spray booth your looking at 2 bake cycles, to run a booth through one bake cycle your easily looking at 75-100 to heat it, Factor 4 bake cycles into the mix ( priming/ Painting) and it really adds up fast.

Rust repair? Fabrication, metal, seam sealer, inner panel coating, doing it the right way again $$$$$$

You also have to look at the shop your considering, Restoration shops generally charge a much higher rate then a regular collision shop thats just looking to push volume and get cars in and out, and restoration skills vary from your average body guy

$9,000 may sound crazy, but that really isnt if your looking for a stunning mirror finish straight job.

Re: How Much Does it Cost?

Do you plan on doing the bodywork yourself? What about tear down & reinstall? My friend repainted mine a few years ago. I did all the bodywork & teardown etc. He is a pro painter & bodyman. It was painted in a booth at his shop. I rented the booth & paid him for 20 hours of actual paint & booth prep time. I worked for his body shop in the 90s & early 2000s so I learned a thing here & there. I replaced the fenders, hood & tail gate from LMC truck (big mistake, they are junk). Glass removed, most cladding removed, rust repair etc. I have over 100 hours of my time start to finish. I feel a $5000-10k paint job is reasonable, judged on the time involved. We used PPG bc/cc paint.
Again it's your vehicle & your budget. If it is prepped correctly, maybe Maaco is your choice. I dont think they do $500 paint jobs anymore, nor do I have experience with them. It's your truck, do it how you like!

Re: How Much Does it Cost?

Jay that looks great man

I cant speak for everybody but i will not paint somebody elses car with body/ prep work they did, Too many factors to consider in doing the job and any wave or fart in the body work gets blamed on the guy who painted it, plus you dont know whats under the primer they used, how it was prepped, if they mixed it right ect

Maaco uses SUPER cheap materials, it looks like junk and is a waste of time IMO, if your going that route find a shop or a person that will use quality material if you want to prep it yourself

I agree. You get what you pay for. I doubt any shop would paint over someone elses bodywork. My case was different because I worked at this shop previously. He double checked my work. I'm not perfect either. My Syclone was painted in 2008.
