how much breakin mileage before i get to the track

Today i got a replacement prom. Nothin else left to do so i drove it home.

Since the rings arent seated yet I just ddrove this firebreathin monster like a little old lady. I dont know how you can tell when the rings are seated. yesterday i checked compression and it was 170.

So how many miles does it take for a fresh motor to be broken in?

A dfi tuner i know told me 50 to 100 is enough to get the rings seated.

I am itching to get this thing to the track, and since my wife and daughter are going to disneyland this fri thru monday as i see it have friday nite and sunday to hit the track if i can get a few miles on this in the next 2 nites.

I just need to find out just how much is enough?

What have others done in the past?

This aint gonna belike john force puttin a new mill in each day cuz his sponsor is pickin uup the tab. But i really dont wanna wait 5 weeks to get 1k miles. ( I only avg normal driving 200 miles a week back and forth to work so waiting a month would be agony)

The old break in times, were for lifter to form a nice wear pattern.

With the roller camshaft, there isn't much to "Break" in.

As I work with rings daily, manufacturing, testing, etc. Yes they may seal a bit better with time, but excessive rpm wont' necc hurt them, nor should boost.

If things are good, fueling is good, no reason to not get on it some. Heck, the big boys like John, make sure it idles, then go full blast down the track.

Of course they rebuild them every run also.

They were also for the chrome rings that I hope you are not using. With
the new plasma moly rings and the right honing stone, your rings are
probably 95 % already. Put some heat into it, check oil pressure,
Have at it. I use tool steels/ with a 280 grit stone in my race car and
they seal in one pass,.

I was under the impression that you should vary the rpm and boost when breaking in the motor, not driving at a low constant rpm.

ditto on what JSDesign and bigtime said.. Fire it up, check the oil pressure, check for noise while letting it come up to temp. After a couple of heat cycles IMO youre ready to have at it.

well that sounds like good news :D

Looks like since the wife and kid are gonna be outta town so weather and time permitting i will be going to Atco either this friday nite or sunday during the day hopefully both.

Only thing i need to do is get some boost on it to make sure the wg is were it should be.

ya know i woke up at 5am and couldnt get back to sleep cuz i wanted to drive the truck... and i was only driving to work. lol :D

speaking of wg adjustment:

cant i take a mity vac, put 15psi pressure on it. then see the wg open fully since pte directions say, adjusting per the picture you will have 15psi base boost.

I would assume without adding any controller on it, as it comes adjusted properly it will only give 15 psi and no more.

is all the above correct?

just driving it normal without getting on it, a quick normal acceleration i have only seen 5lbs on it, but havent gone wot yet!

Hey ed, just curios how do you get the water off your tires after driving
thru the wall at atco?

FWIW, I'd do an oil change or two before getting into it too much.

Clean out any sludge from gaskets, assembly lube, any metal debris.

Might be worth tearing the oil filter apart, just as a check.

Code what?
ed, Thats seems to be a good question about getting the wastegate to spec. I have no clue what a "mitty vac" is though, couldnt you just use an adjustable air commpressor also?

My buddy just dropped in a forged motor in his LS1 and i believe he is going to wait untill he has got about 1k on it before he make's a 10 second pass.

For the wastegate, if you set it like a stock wastegate is supposed to be setup (7/8 overlap etc) it should give you a base boost of 14-16psi. This is about what you want, doing it this way will give you a good start for fine adjustments later on.

You can't. Just try to drive around the deep spots. I never had a traction problem at Atco. I only drive around/through the water and then to the line and launch.

bob

I try to go thru the wall offset a bit so i dont drive thru the rut or valley where the water is laying (kinda like mike just said). Other than that I dont do a burnout or anything. best 60ft i got on the old motor was something like 1.8x.
I only got tires breakin loose after i did the brake boost controller thing you can read about in the tech articles section. That was leaving with Dm showing 12 lbs boost at zero mph. I dont look at the gauge when torqing it up on the line. I just let my right foot creep down on gas, somehow this worked out pretty consistant. eventually a delay box, throttlestop and transbrake if i take this to the next level.

a mityvac is a hand held vac/pressure pump.

brian
good tip on cutting open the oil filter. might prove interesting and hopefully not disasterous!

as for wg adjustment i just did what pte shows in their install directions which looks to be the same thing as the gmc service manual shows in section 6j-12 fig 15.

As for atco I just roll through the water lauch the truck once before you get to the line that clean all four tires right off without a problem. Ed you should not have any problems spinning the tires to the line to get the water off.

Isn't that just making everything hotter? i.e. trans, intercooler, intake

shit, if your that worried about water, lets get some guys down there with 2 plywood strips and lay them over the water box, roll over and presto....problem solved. get a 4x8 sheet of plywood and rip it in half.

I drove on the high spots, not where the water lays. The official was telling me to drive through the water. I had no traction problems.

i actually dont really think that the tires are even wet by the time we drive thru that and get to the line. So why we are talkin about it.

Ok so who wants to play in the water at atco this friday nite or sunday all day. Let me know as i am probly gonna end up there. sunday for sure and very possibly friday.

Wg test went fine on the way home. 15.9 boost nailin it in 3rd gear on 295 on the way home. looks like i got the wg rod on as it should be.

15psi outta be a good wholesome number to start with. :D

oh ya know what was really cool. When i got home and i'm lookin over the dm file. If i hadnt hit my intake with a wrench earlier to be sure my knock sensor worked I would've thought it wasnt workin.

I never saw 15 psi boost without kr before. THis new motor just might be a lotta fun.
