How do you know when a turbo is bad?

Hey all -- I noticed a drop in accelleration in my Ty today, and was wondering what signs you look for that let you know difinitavely that your turbo is going bad? Mine still spools up, but it doesnt have the zip id did. I am also noticing an odd sound, almost like a grinding sound, but I not really (big help I know) that happens when I let off the gas. I want to guess its air from something, but I havent the slightest idea :)

Any light into this would be great! Thanks.

Take your air intake system off (if stock the filter x-over tube and orange hose) Look at the compressor wheel with a mirror look for visual defects and check things out, check to see how it spins is it loose?
That is where i would start looking.

I'd agree with buddy. But to hell with a mirror, reach in there and get your hands durty!!!
Inside the turbine housing where the guy about is speaking, run your finger around the rim of it and feel for an oil like substance(that almost always means the seals have gone bad). Another tell-tell sign that your turbo has had it is if there is any dark smoke coming from the exhaust while the truck is idling..
Hopfully it's just the seals!! In that case most repair shops willl charge as little as $300-#350 for a basic rebuild.

Good Luck

Along with this same subject matter, is there a zero tolerance on side to side play? Mine feels a little loose but there is no oil leaking and no grinding is occuring.

shake the blade side to side. There should be minimal play. To check the thrust bearing try to move it in and out. There should be NONE at all. Look at the blade for rubs marks. The blade will looked smooshed. Find someone who know more about the syty's in your area to give you a hand. A dm file would be nice too. Do you have an aftermarket boost gauge?

It's never enough
I just came to the conclusion that my turbo has ALSO gone bad. At first I thought it was the valve seals, cause it was coughing blue smoke. My dad and I went in and replaced those along with the PCV valve and it did nothing. An old friend had originally said it was the turbo seal, but we were hoping that wasn't it. So looks like I gotta get it rebulit. Either that or an upgrade. Any suggestions??

Thanks

sounds like a good time to upgrade...pte 52 or something of that nature...many options really depending on your fuel system, TC, etc.
