High Speed vibration issue

My issue is that on the highway, my truck starts to vibrate pretty bad at about 65 mph and gets worse at higher speeds (actually gets a little better >85 but I think it's just vibrating so fast, it seems smooth). Seems to be from the front. It is like I have a out of balance tire, warped rim, or something...but here's the issue, I just replaced all 4 tires and they rims seemed fine.

It did this before I changed the tires, but I assumed the tires were bad (the truck has only 28K miles and the tires were probably from the 90's). So to date I have done the following: 4 new tires, lower control arm ball joints (Moog), lowering leafs, 4 new shocks, & F-Body brakes. So I have to assume it is something with the drive train.

Any ideas?

(wasn't sure what to search for, BTW)

your wheels still could be slightly bent, at work we have a roadforce machine that puts a simulated load on the tire/wheel. this machine can find wether the wheel or tire are out of balance. stock wheels aren't that strong. call up local tire shops and ask for a roadforce balancing machine, this would be far cheaper then chasing down a drivetrain vibration.

I hear ya JB. When my ty gets up to around 65 my dashboard is shaking so violently i sometimes where a cup when im driving, just in case. I think mines a tire issue, cause i think the stock tires are still on it lol

Re: High Speed vibration issue

i had the exact same problem and had done all the same, new tires , had rims restored and straightened , complete front end , tires balanced about 64 times , was told torque converter was it ( what a m/fer to swap) , then i found syty.net....... everyone here told me wheel balance was problem , alot of threads on it also , but i was so pissed off at the thing i stuck it in storage for two and a half years. i know there a good thread here somewhere about this problem. i figure if i decide to keep mine ill find somewhere local or someone local to guide me and tune it and stick some zo6's on it.

oh yeah , i replaced my prop shaft also looking for the vibration , and did front and rear u-joints on rear shaft and had it rebalanced. there was a really good thread about it but i suck at the search thing, i could never find what im lookin for. hopefully someone can find it.

Mine does it too. Its not wheel balance...already fixed it. From what Ive noticed it seems to happen on lowered Ty's. It could be the pinion angle but it feels like its in the front end. Maybe something to do with the torsion bars.:dunno: I would like to fix it. Its annoying.

Re: High Speed vibration issue

Thanks a bunch for the responses...

I do have the front lowered a good amount. Does anyone that has done a coil-over swap have this problem?

I will have to look into the road force machine (Thanks Branden)

And if anyone finds the link to any old threads, please post....

Re: High Speed vibration issue

when i got mine it was 100% stock and still is, ride height was also correct , not lowered. all i know is if i drive this thing again and it still does it i swear to god i will pull over and burn it ( i will take off all the cladding befor i drive it ).

dont - my truck started doing the same thing, vibrates at 65+.

I am looking forward to the feedback...

What's ironic is I had a 93 ty (in 93) and it never did this.
And I drove that sucker in NY on the crappiest roads ever.

Mine has less miles now than when I sold mine in 95...

Re: High Speed vibration issue

what gets me is my truck was running smooth as silk about two months ago - then one day it started roaring at exactly 65. wallers the man im sure hes gonna find it. it will be something stupidly simple im sure

Re: High Speed vibration issue

Did it start happening after you lowered your truck? If so, it might be the u joint angle in the rear. I kinda feel a slight vibe on the freeway, and I feel like that's probably it.

Re: High Speed vibration issue

last time i drove mine it was so bad above 60mph that when after i went 25 miles on the highway i had about 10 dash board screws layin on the floor. i think i covered pretty much everything but everyone here seemed to tell me it was a wheel balance problem. dont know, but ill get it back on the road next spring, and if its still there i think my insurance guy will be getting a call...lol

Re: High Speed vibration issue

naa, my truck is lowered, really lowered from previous owner, and it was fine (other than bottoming out on bridges). this isnt a little vibration, it literally starts roaring at 65, but under that say 0-65, its fine, no vibration whatsoever(which perplexes me). checked the tires, wheels which sounds like it would be the problem, but they checked out okay. :dunno:

Re: High Speed vibration issue

I have the ubiquitous Belltech springs in the rear and just lowered the front to match. New Monomax all around, 4 new KDWS tires and Moog ball joints...that's it for changes (besides F-body brakes, but it did this before those)

Amazingly, it seems we have the exact same problem...65 mph

I am going to find a road force balancer and report results in a week or so...but I have little faith that this is going to work though

Steven
Is the vibration the same when you had the blocks in vs your new leafs and coil-ove set-up?
(I know you also have bigger rims, so if you have any info from before those, maybe it would help)

willyson, when waller worked the problm out - share the cure w/ us (these vibes are really frustrating :drinking: )
pat.

Re: High Speed vibration issue

It's hard to remember Jack. I think i tired to keep the angle about the same from when I swapped the rear leafs, but the differences are so subtle, it's hard to say exactly what's making the difference. I don't think the bigger wheels are contributing much (if at all) to the vibration, although misbalanced tires and wheels are one of the main causes of vibrations at freeway speeds. We can do the roadforce test Branden is refering to at my Dad's shop, but I imagine there are a few guys with the same equipment closer to you. You'll probably just have to check around a little to find them. Let us know what things look like. Hope you and your family are doin' well.
