Just droppin a line to say hello to everyone... I recently became the proud owner of '92 Typhoon 2186... purchased in, of all places, Tokyo Japan.

I am, in EVERY sense of the word, a total beginner when it comes to cars in general... so I've got a LOT to learn. Luckily theres a lot of great info in these forums, and from what I can see, the community here is great

Look forward to chatting and soaking up as much info about these awesome cars as I can, and dont be too rough on me -- although first, second, third-day hazing is permitted

How exactly are you getting the Ty here from Japan?

My best advice is to read everything you can get your hands on.

Well, cool thing about being in the Navy is Uncle Sam ships everything for free when you change duty stations Im due to rotate out of Japan in December, so Ill have it home around then.

And yes, Ive been reading everything I can get my hands on... its 4am here in Japan and Ive been in these forums since 9pm... my biggest problem is not knowing exactly WHERE or WHAT certain things are... Ill learn though.

Have you done all your research about exporting the truck out of Japan and importing the truck to the US? Is it simple enough? Does it help being with the Navy as opposed to being a private citizen?

As far as I can tell, I need to get a stateside registry (any help someone could offer me on this would be great, Ive just started checking into it today) and then have it shipped. Im tepmted to go with a private company for shipping it back stateside, thought the Navy will do it for me for nothin... but Ive seen what they do to TVs and other smaller things. :-?

Any advice/past experience with exporting/importing an automobile would be wonderful. Thanks!

seriously congrats. If you want to talk to a syty guy about import/export find sean morris. He probably shipped that typhoon to japan back in 92/93 when it was new.

Hi Brian, my name is Preston 2years ago I shipped my ty through uncle sam from Italy to the states.Here I will list the problems that I encountered.

1.Getting the truck clean enough for the port in Italy to accept it I advise very hot/high pressure water for the undercarrage.I got rejected 3 times keep in mind the port that I was working with only does inspections on two day's a week (this may apply to you as well).The truck must have less than 1/4 a tank of gass to be shipped.I said this because plan your trip to the port you may need a gas can in case you get rejected. :lol:

2. My truck was painted while over seas.So I was missing the door jam stickers THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM!!! I had to send waivers damn near
to the president to get around this. So ensure all factory vehicle data
plates/stickers are in place.Also turn your wheels all the way to the left
then look in behind your pass side front tire on the frame there is a #
make sure this matches your vin #.This also will be checked.

3.If you know who originaly shipped your truck to Japan then this should not apply to you.After I returned to the states I recieved a phone call from
the NY port athority they gave me quote( 72 hours) to report in person
to their office.So I had to fly from WV.to NY.here is where the story gets
N.A.S.T.E. I get to the port walk up to the customer service counter and
the lady askes me to have a seat beside a guy on a couch in minutes I am greeted by a man who walks up to me and said Preston as soon as he said that the guy who had been sitting beside me turned and almost yelled your Preston at this moment millions of thoughts are running through my mind the man who walked up introduced himself Agent ---
F.B.I. all hell is all that I could wisper or think of for that matter.The man who was sitting beside me was named Brian the original owner of TY#1169 from NJ. turned out the truck was stolen in 1994 and never seen again.My response all hell.This story is a lot longer but in the end TY#1169(bella) is mine. 8)
