possibly flexplate....

does it do it in park, then get quieter when you put it into drive????

hmmmmmmmm.... It pretty much does it really bad in a cold start up no matter what gear its in. Then goes away after it reaches normal operating engine temp. Some times there is a faint noise when hot. It is coming near the old pan area. I do not think its a spun rod bearing because there is no trace of metal in the oil pan and gets less and less noisy as you drive it. Im not that great when it comes to flywheels and tannys. Can someone help me or send some info on how to check/replace the flexplate. How much does a new one cost? What are the affects of a broken flexplate?

basically the flex plate is a visual thing. Take off the torque convertor cover and look at the plate, look for cracks around the ring gear. I have a nice used one you can have if you need it.I have a sfi on mine, you could buy a new one they are only 40.00 or so.

Hmmm, a noise that goes away as it warms up could be a "piston slap." Also since my original post here I have checked my lifter preload and found nothing. My noise is still there so I think mine is injector noise.

:2cents: To me a rod will have a definite knock that changes with RPM, load, and usually gets worse as the motor warms up.

Did you ever pull the belt off and see if it went away?

No I didn't pull the serpentine belt off because Im pretty sure thats not where the noise is coming from. The noise is in the rear and low. I got under the truck today and really listened. Im sure I isolated it to near the oilpan. Other than that the truck has been running better than it ever has and pulls real hard.

Re: Here it all is (Datamaster and video)

I have an autosave warranty that I bought with the truck that covers tranny and engine components. I should just see if they can deal with it. The only thing Im afaid of is I get a ying yang that thinks I need a new engine or doesnt know what hes doing and gets a hold of my truck.

sounds to me like a loose converter. try to tighten the bolts.

Re: Here it all is (Datamaster and video)

Well I took the truck to a mechanic that my Autosave warranty honors. I had them look into the cold start noise issue I was having. They said its a lifter. They did a chemical flush and they siad there was a ton of black sluge oil! But the lifter did not get any quiter. The warranty I have will not cover the lifter because "its not completely broken." I guess I will just live with it. Its not really hurting anything. Its just really annoying to listen to for like 10min.

I was close , rockers and lifters goes together :D

Re: Here it all is (Datamaster and video)

I took my truck in to an exhaust place so they could cut the cat out for me. The cat was already hollow! WOW that explains why I was over boosting. And here I thought I was stock.

Re: Here it all is (Datamaster and video)

Well a year later. Im pretty sure its a spun rod bearing. Its starting to get worse on cold starts. Its completely gone when the motor heats up. I have been driving it all over and racing it at the 1/8 mile locally.
When is she going to let go on me? I know there is no way of knowing for sure. But I mean..... What do you guys think?

That sounds like lifters to me. Exactly like a lifter that has bled down while parked and has not pumped back up with oil yet.

I don't think your motor would not have lasted this long with a spun rod bearing.

X2, I just went through the same with my pickup. Thought it was a rod for a while, but went away, then came back a month later.

pull the covers and wiggle the pushrods, the one on the bad lifter will be real loose when the valve is closed. if you dont find one loose at first, turn the crank 1 rev to get the others valves closed and recheck. Thats how i set my mind at ease that i was fixing the right thing and got it done in notime.

Good Luck

Re: Here it all is (Datamaster and video)

I took a metal tube and listened for a noisy lifter on the valve cover. Its down low. I can't hear anything on the top end of the engine.

Re: Here it all is (Datamaster and video)

hey that sounds just like my engine, right before i needed a new motor. it was rod knock in my case, went away hot but if you got down below you could still hear it a little. I hope this is not the case for you

Re: Here it all is (Datamaster and video)

pull your valve covers before a cold start up look for a rock not movinfg like the rest. this is free no new gaskets required or such. besides the lifters are a good ways below the valve covers
