Help with 4L80E rebuild

I'm putting together a 4l80e that someone else took apart and I need a little bit of help. There's a few pieces that I have no clue where they go and was hoping someone may be able to identify what and where they go.

and this last assembly, the forward drum. The inner piece that the plastic thrust washer is lying on wobbles a good bit. Is it suppose to?

first looks like #94
second looks like the thrust washer #86 or #87
third looks like #70 case bushing
its suppose to wobble some

Thanks. I've got access to Mitchell, but it was of little to no help. Hopefully this and the info I received from another member will do the trick.

You can buy the manual to rebuild these - have you got it? $20 I think. Very useful.

I thought about it. I think we got it all figured out. The Torrington bearing was already in place. That was the old one. The thrust washer replaces a plastic one that's prone to melting. And the bushing fits perfectly on the snout of the TC so it goes in the pump, I believe.

I may be wrong about the thrust bearing and I'm still questioning myself about the torrington bearing. At this point I don't think I'd be comfortable putting it back in this guys truck as-is. I'm finding it harder and harder to convince myself not to break the entire thing back down and dismantle every single piece and checking it. We'll see what happens tomorrow.

I would not be comfortable putting it in a truck(not my own) without knowing for sure.

I really don't trust what the guys that took it apart did. The reassembled a few things and I just wanna go back through it.

Buy the manual and do it right or you'll smash something or always wonder when and spend a few $100rather than some hours.

your putting that into a sy/ty? What did you do with the shift lever shaft? Cut it down and weld the lever back on it?

I saw that over at ls1tech. It helped quite a bit. Trans isn't going in a syty. Sorry about that. Guess I should've specified. One last problem. It doesn't seem like the pump is seated all the way in the case. It sticks out by like 1/8" or something.

According to the thread, that means you have installed the pump the wrong way - he did the same thing....

That one? I'm almost positive that I did the same thing. I saw a pic somehwere last night that confirmed it. I put the dots facing down while this guy's were up on the pump he just opened up.

Sounds like there are plenty of gotchas with this! IMpressive you are tackling it yourself though. How much did you spend on rebuild parts/tools if you don't mind me asking?

Nothing so far. The owner bought parts and we had most of the J tools at school. The ones we didn't have, the trans shop down the road let us use.

Most everything inside looked almost brand new.
Clutches and steels were barely worn. No excessive wear on hard parts, either. It did need a new 4th gear piston housing or whatever you'd call it. A few of the "ears" above the big snap ring broke so the clutches couldn't engage properly. The snap ring was actually hanging partly out of the groove when they intially pulled it apart. The complaint was losing 4th gear and shifting very hard once it lost 4th.

This is correct the way it is. The champher towards converter. The flats and the dots are correct. That's all. Leave it the way it is in this pic.

The only other thing we can add for sure is the clutch hub will wobble until assembeled.

That's the thing. My dots weren't showing when put back together. Besides that, everything should be golden.

So the owner went and got the ATSG manual. It appears that the pics and info on Mitchell come right out of the book. Oh well. I did come across a thread at another BB that included exploded views of the actual parts, not just unrecognizable drawings. The guy even went thru and numbered/labeled every piece. Thanks for the help. I really do appreciate it.
