Help!! Truck not starting

For the last two days i've been trying to get my truck to run, and nothing, it will crank over a million times but never start, originally i had the starter out, and when i put it back in it was in the wrong spot, so i found TDC and put it back in and made sure the cap and rotor were on #1, and still nothing, i replaced the ignition coil, i checked that there is fuel and spark, and i tried rotating the distributor back and forth but still nothing, does anyone has any idea, the first time i tried to start it up it backfired, but nothing else???????

Go back through and recheck you plug wires. If it backfired I would think your timing is off or your plug wires are wrong.

I don't know how you take the starter out and put it in the wrong spot, it shouldn't have anything to do with TDC.

check the ignition module. Could have gone bad. Exact same thing happened to me on a brand new engine with all new parts. Fired up for a minute and then i just kept cranking. Are you getting spark from the coil? Are getting spark thru the wires?

Re: Help!! Truck not starting

a thoroughly checked the wires and made sure they went where there suppose to, and i have a brand new ignition module, i cranked the motor over the the plugs off to make sure they sparked, and the engine was rotated without the distributor being in this is how it all started

If you didn't work on anything else that might effect it starting, I would go through and recheck TDC again.

I was thinking module too. or the wires going to it from the coil.

Re: Help!! Truck not starting

You sure you don't have the distributor in 180* around... I almost did that

Re: Help!! Truck not starting

thats what im going to try next, do i have to crank the motor around once or can i just pull the distibutor around 180, how do you know what stroke it is on?

The dist. can only go in there 2 ways because of the oil pump, so you can just pull it straight up about 2", rotate it 180, then drop it back in. As to what stroke it's on, the easiest way to tell is with a compression gauge... it's going to be either firing #1 at TDC for #1, or if it's in 180* firing #1 at TDC for #4

Re: Help!! Truck not starting

Hey I forgot to tell you guys I put on new rockers and head studs before this problem started, and I followed the manual to adjust them, and then I checked the compression and it was 0, could this be causing my truck not to start? I think I have the timing right but it still wont start?

Re: Help!! Truck not starting

0 compression might cause a no start condition in my book.
you have to adjust the rockers, when the cyl. is in tdc and both valves are closed.

Re: Help!! Truck not starting

i talked to the guy who sold me my rockers and head studs and said to adjust them when the intake is closing then adjust the exhaust, and when the exhaust is closing adjust the intake

Re: Help!! Truck not starting

my rockers were adjusted way to tight, timing is perfect though, is there a way to adjust the rockers while the motor is running? I have roller rockers

Re: Help!! Truck not starting

you can adjust them while the engine is running. It can get messy but best thing to do is cut up spare valve covers.
