help! no boost. *FIXED*

Well i was driving my sy today and it decided to stop boosting. The gauge will go to zero and the truck is really slow. The truck was fine yesterday. Also at WOT it doesn't want to shift now. Kind sits there and rev up. Will shift fine a any other throttle position. But i guess thats another problem. I replaced all the vac lines on the boost control solenoid but nothing changed (they were cracked all over). All other vac lines are good. I checked all the intercooler and intake hoses and they seal nicely. The turbo doesn't have any play and spins good. I dont have the money for a datamaster cable yet so i cant use it. I have searched but only came up with what i just went over. The truck is stock with 92,000 miles. I also plan on doing plugs, cap, and wires on Friday. Any help would be nice. thanks

Re: help! no boost

If the gauge simply will not go past 0-1 PSI, you must have a major leak somewhere. If you have shop air you could try the Bike tube trick from www.sytyarchives.com

A leak that big, I would think you'd hear it from inside the cab. What if you open the hood and try to build a little boost with the brakes on while someone watches/listens from the side?

Re: help! no boost

i will try the bike tube right now. I just took it out again to see how it gets to zero. it goes the zero really fast but just stops there. Is it possible that the actuator on the turbo is stuck? Would that stop it from boosting? Thanks

Re: help! no boost

i just tried the bike tube and everything was good. i also tried boosting it with the brakes while my friend watched/listened and there were no leak noises. he also didnt see the actuator move. is it suppose to move? the boost gauge was still only zero.

Re: help! no boost

take the intake off of the front of the turbo, and stick a small mirror in front of it to see if it is spinning while it its running.

Re: help! no boost

are you sure that your Intercooler to Throttlebody silicone coupler is tight? and there are no holes in the turbo to intercooler hose?

The actuator will only move when you get over 14.7 psi. Most of our trucks cannot hold that at the line without creeping forward, more likely launching, and/or overheating the trans . Also, building that kind of boost with the hood open is not so good!!

Is your IC ok? Longshot but if it is low on coolant or empty, there may be a leak from the airflow out of the IC. When cold, blow into it and see what happens. You shouldn't be able to blow air into it.

It is more than likely a hose somehere. Double check!!!

Re: help! no boost

ok im going to do the heater hose mod to the ic toda and triple check all the hoses and stuff. Except for the turbo to ic and ic to tb, what should i check? thanks

Re: help! no boost

almost right next to the oil filler neck there is two small vaccum lines....mine popped off one time and all it would do is pull vaccum...check to make sure the are connected cause if the arent it will be dog slow.....the lines are almost right underneath the feeds from the intercooler up over the engine to the upper i/c.....the are two small plastic ones...more than likely it will be right there

Re: help! no boost

Check to see if one of your exhaust manifolds cracked on either side.
Its hard to see a hair like crack but it happened to me right between 2 & 4. Good luck.

Re: help! no boost

well i just went through all my vac. lines and they are all good. still have no boost. Im going to replace the intercooler tubes. I think there might be a leak between the tb and intercooler. this is so frustrating. Is there a possibility that it could be my turbo?

Re: help! no boost. *FIXED*

Well i am so stoked right now. :turbo: I haver replaced abunch of vac lines, the turbo to ic hose, the ic to throttle body hose, plugs, wires, and cap/rotor but nothing helped the boost problem. All that stuff needed to be replaced though. Finally I was so pissed that i "ripped", metaphorically speaking, the exhaust off including the cat. Well that was the problem. The cat was clogged. The truck is running better than ever right now. I know I have to be careful not to over boost. But I am so excited right now. Thought I would share. Also my tranny is shifting better than ever to. It wouldnt shift a WOT when I lost all my boost but now I think it will. I just afraid to go WOT with a 2bar and no cat. Anyone know if i can just run a muffle w/o a cat and not have to worry about overboost?

Ya, it's got a Turbo
Re: help! no boost. *FIXED*

I would think a properly functioning wastegate would protect you against any overboosting conditions, cat or no cat.

Re: help! no boost. *FIXED*

Doesn't the wastegate operate off of boost pressure? Cat or no cat once you've reached 14 PSI the gate dumps, no?
Or is it just that the stock wastegates are slow to respond and with a few mods and no cat the boost can build faster?
