Help! Can't remove turbine housing

I am tearing down my original turbo and I can't get the exhaust housing off. The housing is not stuck to the cartridge, it spins around and I can lift it up, but when I try to lift off it is like it is catching on the turbine blades or something. When I lift up, the shaft will not spin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think its pressed in the back side. I remember fussing with my PTE turbo trying to get it to separate the actual center housing from the back hot side housing. It took some work, and being very careful not to damage or mushroom any surfaces. Maybe I'm wrong? At least I recall having a real hard time doing what it sounds like your up to..??

The housing is loose, but when I try to lift off it's like it's caught on the turbine wheel somehow

Ha ha I got it! There's a backing plate on the turbine that was still stuck even though the housing was free

1st... It has been a while sence I have done this. But, If I remember correctly....

You should not have a problem on a stocker. It should just fall off. It is probably stuck on the metal backing plate between the exhaust wheel and center housing. Try shaking the turbo around or see if you can reach it with a pick tool. If all else fails. Remove the intake housing. Unscrew the nut on the front wheel. Remove the intake wheel by gently hitting the shaft with the wood handle of a hammer. You should be left holding the exhaust housing with the stuck ehaust wheel and shaft still in it.

Oops... looks like you got it while I was typing this message.
