Re: headgaskets

if you are running higher compression or plan to run a big turbo and/or high boost you can go with a gasket like a cometic (although there is a better one out now) but i ran a victor on my stokes and at over 30 pounds of boost and never once had a problem. i'm running felpro's on my stroked small block with 10.5:1 compression and am going to hit it with a 200 to 250 shot. i've heard of people who ran conservative builds and had problems with cometics. we put cometics on maxtors when we had the heads off a year ago and he hasn't had any problem. with cometics you had better have a completely flat surface on both the head and block or they will leak. just warnin ya... not tryin to start a fued. i know from experience. mild build doesn't need them i don't think and just puttin them on doesn't guarantee no problems. if money isn't a problem then go ahead, but take my advice and make sure they're flat or you're gonna hear the words "i never heard of this before..."

Re: headgaskets

cometics go on all my motors now. I used to use the stockers without any problems and now I use cometics. the cometics do require a very smooth head and deck finsish( so says cometic) but I've not seen a std finish cause a probelm

Re: headgaskets

i will post the name of the gaskets that i'm told are the next step up from cometics. we had a set of cometics we just put on a vette and they leaked like sivs. felpros didn't leak at all. but there is a new gasket i was told about by wheel to wheel that they started putting on mountain motors with huge twin turbo boost that hold up better than the cometic. about the same price. just can't think of the name right now. i'll get it to you monday or so. i guess in the long run the decision is an individual one. my stokes motor and i'm sure john's both are studs for the heads. they are a bitch to replace. actually... a bitch and a half. my small block on the other hand is a pretty simple thing to change. one thing i've always wondered about, maybe john knows the answer. if you put a gasket on that won't blow, and the motor wants to vent somewhere because of high boost or whatever and the head gasket holds, will something a lot more expensive blow out instead of the head gasket?

Re: headgaskets

i don't know if they've changed things or they're having production problem but i know several people who have had problems with them. when the ones we just did leaked like mad on a brand new motor that was checked afterward and was supposedly perfect and flat and with brand new afr cnc race ready 227 heads that were checked and supposedly perfect too. we were told to use a special glue and put them back on and they leaked just as bad. i wish i could remember the name of the other brand which is supposed to be better but as we all know i'm gettin old and slow ( kind of wish i knew how to put the picture up i just sent maxtor and john to show how slow i'm gettin...) but i'll have to wait till tuesday after the holiday to get the name

i will tell you this after what i just went through with them ... i wouldn't use them. i'm tired of this "i never heard of such a thing happening" crap

Re: headgaskets

just in case i forget to get back, you can call wheel to wheel powertrain in madison heights michigan and ask for jory sullivan. tell him i gave you his name and told you about the headgaskets they are using and was gonna put on rays corvette. he can give you the name and tell you about them. you can actually just order them from him. trust me... they know a little about puttin a motor together and what works and what doesn't. you can just buy them from him. don't forget to tell him i told you to call. he's sometimes hard to get and doesn't check his email often, so if your in a hurry get him on the phone. if you can't get him ask for dan sinkowitz. he should also know, but i don't think you can just order from dan cause he is more in production and scheduling and jory is more into sales and purchasing. he's a nice young guy so you will like him.

Re: headgaskets

I called Jory. He is a nice guy. He stated that the gasket in question was the SCE ICE Titan. Great headgasket, but unfortunately they haven't designed it for our 4.3. They have run some ICE non-Titan(they did not construct the silicon bead around the fluid holes) for some customers. These gaskets do have the O-ring designed in them but you(or your engine builder) would have to seal the fluid holes with silicone or copper coating. The SCE tech I spoke with gave me a SCE part# S17064. The ICE Titan for the 4.3 (88-93) is under construction as we print(4-8wks) SCE 800-427-5380(Steve) Put a bug in his ear.
