Has any done IRS or rack and pinion in a syty?

I have seen a C4 vette IRS go in a 1st gen Blazer.
There was a thorough write up in Sport Truck some time ago.

Rack and pinion has been discussed but I have never seen it in a 4wd/awd.
Its been discussed here but never became a reality in a SyTy that I know of.

Please do start posting pics as soon as you being this project.
Inquiring minds want to know...

While i still was living in the states and worked for a Dodge dealer i thought of putting a Rack from a -97-00 Dakota/Durango 4x4.

They use the torsionbar front suspension and have the rack mounted on the front of the crossmember. Maybe something to look in too??

Well i know that there is a Sonoma GT that has a rack in it, but its mostly a strip truck, and that on my GT i am planning on swapping in a mustang 2 power rack that i bought some months back, mine will be mounted to the front of the crossmember, similair to the dodge dakata design.

Also there is a company that is going to relaese a bolt in rack and pinion swap sometime early next year, cost is going to be around 700 bucks or so for the whole kit.

If its been done in an AWD SyTy i want to see some pics, id like to go this route on the Ty, although i must say that my current combo of oa a new idler and pitman arms and ZQ8 box and waller(Borgeson) shaft and grant wheel, theres no way it could get any tighter. But the rack will shave some weight.

I want that kit... Let me know who it is that is going to produce it...

Re: Has any done IRS or rack and pinion in a syty?

Supposedly Unisteer has a rack & pinion kit for S10's. I've never seen anything, though.

Some could call and find out.

edit: Apparently this guy has used their R&P kit.

Try this link: www.mavelgear.com/UnisteerProduction

Ijust spoke with Brian @ 1.800.338.9080 ext.37. For around $800 the kit will be complete but will be manual. He said they R@D it on a heavier, full-size truck and he had no probs turning it at a stand still but he did say he was 6'4", 230lbs. He went on to say it will be a canyon-carver at speed.

They haven't worked out all the odds and ends but Unisteers goal is to have it ready for market in Jan-Feb of 2007.

Your link doesn't work and the Unisteer website seems to freeze my internet browser  . Where can I get some information on their R&P setup?

Hey guys.... we are getting close to developing a kit for the Sy/Ty's. Once it is ready for the market we will be letting all of you guys know ASAP.

FWIW, A properly engineered 3 link/panhard rod rear stick axle suspension has proven faster on the race track than the IRS in Ford Mustang applications. Just check out Griggs Racing site for more info. Griggs had the 1st and 3rd place overall times at the Virginia City Hillclimb event last year and they were both in older gen ford mustangs.

Here is some info I posted on IRS before I gave up on the project. Matching the 3:42 gears will be an issue.

"I've done a ton of research in the past and considered using the following company to build the conversion kit:

Flat Out Engineering
Rancho Cucamonga, CA
909/608-7432

This kit is the most likely candidate to fit our trucks and can be either a complete bolt in or weld in kit. The only tough fabrication part would be to set up the pinion support bracket which needs to be welded onto the cross support.

Here's a link to a similar build, but is an older Ford truck with slightly wider straight frame rails.

http://www.customclassictrucks.com/howto/58799/

I've been trying to pursuade the owner of Flat Out Engineering, Don McNeil to build me a kit for over a year now, but he needs someone to bring a truck down when he can find the time to do some measurments.

The kit would most likely work with some creativity, but the question is will the eyes for the double ear brackets fit outside the frame rails or will the end up directly underneath the frame rails requiring some serious frame notching and reinforcing of the frame rails.

I would discard the stock Vette trailing arms that look like "dog bones" as well as the stock camber rods and upgrade to some much stiffer pieces from Doug Rippie Motorsport.

Here is the link:

http://www.dougrippie.com/drm/new_products.htm

Other things to consider are matching the 3:42 gears and posi, shortening the driveshaft, possibly shortening the half shafts and developing a sway bar mounting kit.

Flat Out sells brackets that eliminate the transverse leaf spring so you can covert to coil over shock setup."
