harmonic balancer

not sure if this is the right section for this, so...

i know this may be asking a lot, but can someone post up pics of their harmonic balancer either installed or off? i need a reference for mine. i think mine has "walked" severely forward (towards radiator).

i know what a balancer on a NORMAL vehicle should look like, but to be honest a typhoon just isn't a normal vehicle. not sure if it is different.

not only does it look off but i just got my timing checked and it was at 42 deg. advanced in idle with tan wire disconnected. that can't be right!

if it is wrong then i guess i am in the market for a new one. fellas?

I dont think it is possible for it to walk towards the radiator unless the key chuck on the crank broke off, which prevents it from slipping on the crankshaft. I have seen a bad HB that walked.
Did u check the base timing with the brown/black wire disconnected?. Check at the timing tab for 0. Not the timing gun. If it is at 0, it should be okay.

Re: harmonic balancer

X2 Unless the bolt to the crank came loose. It's not just a press on dampener. If the weight itself has moved I suspect it would have a definite wobble.

Re: harmonic balancer

Do a TDC check. Otherwise if your fan belt is still in alignment it hasn't walked. as mentioned can you post a pic?

Re: harmonic balancer

Your balancer should be the same as a 350 balancer. There shouldn't be anything strange or wierd about it.

Is I mistaken???

YES!, that is mine on the left. i just don't know if that seal/ring is still intact, though? i mean, how am i getting 42 deg. advance?
so i guess that IS the way they look. never seen one like that before. always thought they sat flush and not like some deep dish rims

love the balancer on the right.
by the way silverblaz, thanx for the pics.

serp belt is straight. all 4 pulleys are in-line. i will have to do a tdc check in detail to figure out the 42 deg advance. i will take a pic. 2morrow of it on the truck just to make sure if everything is ok.

Re: harmonic balancer

I didn't realize that the pictures WERE NOT of your damper. Compare the relationship of the timing marks on the ring to the key way in the hub of yours to the one (silverblaz) above. All you have to remove is the big bolt in the center to observe the key way.

got it

Re: harmonic balancer

turns out the balancer has 2 timing marks. the one 260 degree or so was painted. the other 80 degree or so was not painted. i took off the 260 degree paint and painted the 80 degree mark and checked timing again. with the timing light i got nothing. i could see the non-painted 260 mark but not the 80.

anything?

bruce, thank you for posting my balancer pic for me.

Re: harmonic balancer

you lost me on the position of the 2 marks. are you going from the keyway being 0*? if so my 2 marks are at about 80* and 340*, or 2 o'clock and 11 o'clock- 11 being the one on mine thats painted to use. Is this about what you've got?

Re: harmonic balancer

yeah mine does look to be a good inch further to the left compared to those. I'll have to check TDC when it goes back together.

Checked mine with a piston stop last night when I got it back on and it was off about 3/4" (however many degrees that is?) So I made a new mark for now until I wanna get a new or better balancer. I'll be checking it again after its run a while to see if its still moving.

I wonder if its detonation that makes these things move or just a lot of power? anyone have a clue?

i second that ?, but perhaps it is just age. i mean my balancer doesn't look too fresh. it appears to have some age to it.
