So i finally get off my arse and get the ty an optima yellow top. Me and my girlfriend roll out to a pizza place to meet a few friends and drink a few beers. On my way back i have the truck in cruise with the windows down doing about 75 when all of a sudden i hear that horrible grinding comming from behind my gage cluster on the left side. I believe something is up with the ODO. If im around 45 its hit or miss. Its not so loud around that speed if at all. When i hit 50 its getting loud, 60 its almost as loud as the wind whistling in the truck. Any clues??

Re: grinding.

I a noisy speedo cable in one of my old cars. I'm not sure if it's a proper fix or not, but I just unscrewed it out of the back of the speedometer and squirted in some teflon lube.

Do our clusters still use a cable?

Well thats a good one to find out, being we don't have a cable. I'll get back to you.

Re: grinding.

!UPDATE!

Well i did a little test the other afternoon on the way to my concert... Apparently it has something to do with the driver side window. If the window is down more then about 3 inches the noise kicks on. If the window is up fully the noise didnt happen once. It does seem to be coming either from inside the door very near the dash, or from the dash itself.

Re: grinding.

I think im going to rip the thing apart. The prevous owner did alot of quick fixes getting the dash and trim panels back together for whatever reason and left a few screws and bolts out. So in an efford to fix that ill try and trace the noise at the same time... GOD i wish my garage had an A/C... :D

Re: grinding.

!UPDATE!

While taking the Ty for a cruise about a week ago the grinding came and went as usual. I arrived at my buddies house, drank a few beers, got tired and left to head on home. Halfway home im watching my speedo and think "hmm.. this seems a little fast for 39..." so i excellerate. Nothing. Its stuck at 39 miles per hour. The stop light up ahead is creeping slower and slower twords me so i ease on the breaks ( quarter tank of gas, so im driving like grandma moses). As i stop still nothing. 39 miles per hour. As i pull away from the light and hit about 55ish it snaps free from the clutches of 39 and reaches the apropriate speed. I havent gotten around to yanking the cluster off yet but ill probly end up doing it tomorrow after i replace the idler arm and chase down the vaccume leak thats hampering my AC and post my findings.

Im still baffled as to why the window being up or down affects the problem...

Don't shoot me with to big a gun here :rotf: but is the noise actually coming from outside and the window actually killing it somehow? Maybe its a linkage issue inside the door and the wind is cousing a vibration of some kind. That is strange though. Side bar: I had a strange and rather loud noise that was primarly RPM related and (long story) it went away when I changed the cat.

Re: grinding.

LOL i wish wind noise was the case.. Its intermitent at around 60mph and nothing below 50 so wind is out of the question... never had a problem with the speedo untill the noise started tho..
