Got the Snitzzz scared out of me today

I took my vehicle in today to a test only smog station. This is California, the land of the smog Nazis. The guy had was testing 2 cars before he started on my truck. First off, he could not find in the "testing specs manual" a 91 GMC Syclone. Of course, the book had it spelled Cyclone....duhhhhh, this is California, land of fruits and nuts. So he stated to test my truck and he said that it was way....too dirty to pass smog, now I'm running scared that I just bought this truck and it will need tons of money to make it pass smog and maybe it was modded on the inside? Well the pollution numbers began dropping and after a couple of minutes it was so clean, that the guy could not believe it! Needless to say I'm really happy now. It was because the truck was too cold and sat for too long before testing..

I remember getting smogged in California. The first tip is to make sure the car/trk is warm before testing. But it's always a nerve-wracking situation, esp with performance vehicles.

I second the pay a little extra thing....the smog stations here will usually enter my VIN and stick a civic on the dyno.

When u have to...u have to.
I usually just sent them the vin miles make and model and in a few days ill get it via fax.
my ty wouldn pass since it has the egr block and the cai.

You try your best to keep the "appearance" of stock or buy parts with EO numbers on them. but they still must pass the sniffer test. Never buy a "polished turbo"...LOL.

That little xtra these days run about $500 if you don't know anybody.

Yes I agree with you, it is the most nerve wracking thing a car owner will face.

Almost nobody here in Calif. is willing to risk their license to smog a "questionable" car. 5 years ago is was not too much of a problem, but now it is really tough to find anybody to help you out. That is why you will never see big HP cars out here.

Well it always was about 150-200 for me.

if my facts are right, vehicles now have to have a "dynamic" smog test, in certian counties that have higher "smog" levels, they put it on a dyno and run it through real world scenarios, limited to rear or front wheel drive. the good thing about it is no AWD cars have to, they don't have the dynos to do them "yet" so its a static test for them, which is better/easier for passing.

you will need to get all the way back to 1979 to get a smog exemptetion vehicle, used to be that we could get a diesel vehicle and mod it with a gas engine because diesels were exempt, but no more, newer diesels are now having to pass smog tests.

now for high HP vehicles, seems, at least for cali, you just have to wait for the auto manufactors to create them..trust me, i would love to tune and change a few things on many vehicles, but you just have to deal with smog cert every two years on 4 year or older vehicles...

This past tuesday I went to a friend that has a shop to get my TY inspected and we were talking about the new rules and regulations in New york for inspections. We also were talking about the smog testing in california and he said it if he had a shop in cali he would not do inspections. Of course i now there are specific smog locations but just saying he would pass becasue of all the bull involved. His brother is in LA and he has a mechanic shop so i guess they talk about it. New York use to be crazy you had to strap down the car / truck on the dyno, there was a video recorder you had to have set up and if it was AWD they could bypass the dyno part but it had to pass the polution and visual inspection which my truck always passed......Now its even easier its a visual inspection and thats it. Of course VIN has to come back clean but not more than that. He use the hand bar code reader clicked it on the window sticker and thats it. Whats the mileage and im on my way home. HAHAH :tup:
