Front differential question, need advice

My Typhoon has a loose driver side stub axle. There is play up and down and front to back when you take hold of the round flange where the half shaft bolts to. It appears that the axle bearing is shot. The steel c-clip seems to still be there as there is the typical slight movement in and out, you can feel the axle bottoming out on the clip. This loose axle is most likely where my vibration is coming from.

After extensive searching, I could not find the answer to my question which is: Can the driver side front axle bearing be replaced with the front differential still in the truck? I plan to install new seals on both sides as well as the spring steel c-clips while I am at it (they both are leaky). Both half shafts appear to be fine, no boot tears or leaks.

Also, does anyone know the part number for the axle bearing?

You will need two axle seals, 14039577 and one pinion seal 14039587. Follow Don W's instructions, 5th post down http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=81993&highlight=front+diff+rebuild

That looks like the bearing I may need. The question is, can this bearing be installed without having to take the differential out? Can it be done while still in the truck? I have the service manual, but it isn't very clear. I did find a post that had a picture of the stub axle out and you can see the bearing inside there. It looks like you could get it out with a puller. At least I hope it can, lol!

I think you have enough room to do it. I would worry about how much metal the failed bearing put in the diff and what other damage that could have caused. Just drop the diff, it's not really that much work. I just put mine back in a day or so ago. Fun times I tell you!

You are right, I should just take it out. I am very mechanically inclined so I know it wouldn't be too big a deal to do. What I will do first though, is go ahead and pull the stub axle and take a peak in there and see whats going on. Then if need be, I'll go ahead and yank it out. Thanks so much for the info!!

Just put my front diff back in today and it was not fun. Definitely have some help when bringing it down because it will get caught on the oil pan and the top mount. You will also have to bend the mount bracket by the drive pinion back for some clearance. Oh and putting it on will not be easier than putting it back in, fellow member A-Bomb and I have the war wounds to prove it.

Is you problem solved after replacing the bearing?
I have also the same problem, but the needle bearing was ok. I did replaced it to be sure and put everything together but the axle still have play up and down... I this normal? I cant see any sings of wear on the axle stub self...
What else can be wrong?

( i know this topic is 9 years old, but i thought it is the same problem....)

I would also check your CV axles. Are they original or aftermarket. Some of the after market axles are too short and will pull the stub axle out upon turning and wear the bearing and stub axle...

Ok it seems to me that they are orginal, i own the typhoon for a year now. How can i check this? But if i understand i need a new stub axle? I already looked but i cannot find them anywhere any suggestions?

We have a few but let me check with John. To verify you have original axles look for a date code on the outer boot. It should have a 92 or 93 in a small circle
