Front diff?

I notice at speeds above 45 or so I'm getting a growling sound from the front I think. If I'm on the highway and I'm on the gas it sounds like a bearing noise when I let off the gas it whines. Can I take my front propshaft out to try and diagnose it. I thought it may be front hubs but the noise doesn't change when I turn the wheel and I put it in the air and theres no play in them. I'm thinking more toward the front diff at this point. Any suggestions would help.

It sounds more like a low fluid noise than a worn differential noise. I'd check that first. Removing the propshaft will not stop the diff from spinning

Re: Front diff?

sounds like the rear pinion bearing in the front diff, but take out the propshart to try to isolate the noise

Put it on a lift or 4 jack stands(be careful if using jack stands, if it comes off you get ran over) and have a friend get in and drive it at the speed it makes noise. Then just listen to everything with a stethoscope till you hear the noise. Pick up an automotive stethoscope at any tool store for about $10-15.

Re: Front diff?

Could be a pinion bearing. If it is leaking oil around the pinion seal then it probably is a pinion bearing. Check the oil level first. Removing the prop shaft will not allow the front diff to stop turning in a SyTy because of the solid right axle. If it was a 4X4 then that would work.
