I'm working on my DD T-10. Getting ready to leave on a 7,500 mile trip in the morning. Some of you know I had an unfortunate incident in which I hit a curb head-on hard enough to bend a wheel and blow a tire a few days ago. That stuff is all fixed, but now I hear a "Grrrrrrrr" from about 15mph to a stop as I decelerate. This is new since the accident.
Remember the DD is part-time 4X4. When I removed the caliper and rotor, and turn the hub, I can hear and feel a very rapid click-click-click... It is coming from the diff. When the axle is disengaged (2WD), the LH axle drives the side gears and pinions at all times. I tried a full time axle I have in my yard from a Ty, and it makes the same noise. It is from the little spider and side gears. When I turn the driveshaft yoke, and everything turns, there is no noise.
Those of you that have had one of these apart or have had one fail, should I be concerned about this noise? How delicate are those gears and pin?
I don't have time to fix it. I guess my contingency plan will be to remove the axle shaft, gut it, and reinstall the stub in the bearing. I plan on a couple of stops where it will be possible to effect repairs, if needed.
