I was board at work, and i thought since i had my diff out i would cut a notch in one of the bolt holes for a drain, I put a oil drain plug o ring on it and some thread sealer.

Front Diff. Drain

Front Diff. Drain

Eric,

I've got my Frt Diff. out also, and apparently one of the guys on the list has successfully drilled a hole in his Front Diff and installed a plug. The Pass ½ of my Front Diff case is damaged, so I tried to drill a Drain plug hole as an experiment, but I was unsuccessful in getting it to seal tight. But I will be replacing it anyway, so no loss.

From the picture, U R removing part of the flat sealing surface above the bolt hole, on the short, non-threaded, Pass side case, right ? So then oil can then drain out the hole when U remove the bolt ? Not sure why U would need a drain Plug - just use the bolt. Sounds a little risky as the case may not seal totally again. So, does it seal ?

Up until your experiment I had pretty much resigned myself to sucking it out w some kind of a device. Please let us know whether it leaks or not.

yeah i used the non threaded side, i also use the gm red gasket maker, i have sealed transmissions and other front diffs with almost the same size sealing surface and have never had a leak. its not like there is any preasure in the diff, and the fluid is kinda thick ( also using gm syn fluid got plenty layin around, this stuff is $29 a qt  ) but only time will tell

there is a spot to fill from on the stock unit. you do the same thing for it as you do on the xcase. fill until it runs out then stop.... :fist:

Eric,

U paid $29./Qt for Syn. fluid ? The normal Mobil etc. in the store is only $5-8./Qt.
