Fragged the tranny, no second or OD, suggestions please.

My Ty had a new tranny put in it just before I got it. Now it's about 55k later, and I just nuked 2nd and OD. I was pulling away from a stop and it went for second and lurched and then skipped to third. So if you try to put it into second it just freewheels, and OD does the same thing. I have had no other problems with the tranny, replaced the fluid regularly, etc. Last I changed it, it looked fine, no burning or anything. You can still drive the truck, you just have to fake it into third from first.

Normally I would put it up on jacks and take the time to get a tranny built. I had *just* relocated up to Seattle, and currently don't have anywhere to work on the truck, everything is packed (and in storage for months).

Soooo, I have to have someone else work on the truck, which kills me. Basically, should I roll to the dealer (ack) and just have them replace the whole damn thing (with the right damn replacement) or should I trust them to dig around and replace the band and anything else that fragged? Right now I'm looking for the most inexpensive route to getting the truck running, I can get the tranny built after I get back into a house, etc. They will have to pull the tranny to try and fix it, and I'm half inclined to just tell them to R&R a new one, I don't trust those guys and would rather just put a new one in anyway.

Should I let them muck with it and try and fix it or just have them swap it out? Any good tranny guys in Seattle?

Thanks.

This is exactly how mine broke, lost 2nd and od. I just bought a whole new tranny, becuase the shop i went to quoted my about $1100 to fix it, and no warranty.

If you have GM put you in a new syty "replacement" tranny you probably won't like it. Their replacement tranny's are not set up like the originals. Shift's aren't that firm and it won't upshift into 4th at WOT. I had one put in 20k miles ago under warranty. I confirmed this with Hartman- you for the most part don't know what you'll get. I made sure it was the right part number, they had to get it out of Flint.

Merk also got a GM replacement tranny recently, and had to do stuff to it to make it a regular SyTy tranny. You need to be careful going that route.

I think most of the cost of a rebuild is in the labor rather than the parts. Unfortunately, having them just replace the 2-4 band probably won't be much cheaper than doing a full rebuild... Depending on which parts you choose, of course. Maybe check into some local tranny shops and see what they quote you for a full rebuild vs. just fixing the band to get some idea...

just pull it and replace the band...it's either the band. the band anchor or the 2nd and 4th servo...
