Found a Typhoon!

I have found a white 1993 Typhoon that is for sale. He is asking 15k OBO, and has owned it since it was new. Only problem is it has 158k miles. Am I foolish for buying it when it still has the original engine and turbo? It is an elderly gentleman, but you never know how some people drive. The engine looks clean, I drove it and it seemed to run pretty strong (I have no experience with forced induction though). Paint is a little rough, and the front bumper is hanging kinda funny. The interior however is very clean with only the normal wear and tear. With my minimal experience as far as getting a "feel" for a turbocharged engine, am I getting myself into trouble? I'd appreciate any help. I noticed some of you live in Denver, shoot me an email and maybe you can come check it out before I buy it.

well I planned on talking him down, but is it even worth buying at all when it has this kind of mileage? Should I wait until one better comes along (if that even happens)?

its worth buying in my opinion if its clean and has the paperwork since he is the orginal onwer, but I wouldnt spend over 9 or 10K either.

Think he's smoking crack for that mileage and the lack off additional mods (McCoy motor, wheels, ultimate, exhaust, pte setup etc)

As a reference, I paid $12k for mine over 2 years ago and it had 104k on it and a $3000 paintjob that won BEST PAINT at the nats 2 years ago..

So imho $15k is like giving gramps a secondary income to social security.

For $15k thats pretty overpriced, get a $8-9k truck, dump a PTE setup and a McCoy motor in and HOLD ON, for the same price as gramps ride it will be 10x better.

If it it a clean ty I would say buy it. But for that price you can find a way better TY. Tell him he needs to be at $8-9000 on price not $15000. He will never sell at that price.

Where is it located - not in Evergreen, is it? I'd be happy to come look at it tonight if you want, PM me if you are interested. I could probably get Will to come along as well. But yeah, I think the price is high as well.

Do you know where the Ken Caryl Air Care Colorado Emissions Testing center is? I work there, and so does he. I'll be there from 8am till 4:00pm. If you want you can roll by at that time and take a look at it. I'd really love the opinion(s) of someone who currently owns one. I think I can manage to talk him down quite a bit, considering the bluebook value is only 12,500. Hold on, I'll send you my cell phone number and my name through email.

$15,000 is too much for such a high mileage truck.

I paid $15k for mine, which had 110,000 fewer miles.

I'd say $8-$9k is fair.

I'm in Albuquerque and i think I'm alot more realistic on price and condition on the truck, I've done all the basic items required to get you to a good starting point for mods. I've just lowered the price to $9200, go to the classifieds for a better description. Plus, Denver is only 5 hours from here. :D

Just a heads up, I met with Eric the other day and drove this truck. It's a dog. Hit in the front, repainted (maybe replaced) hood and passenger front fender, cladding falling off, replaced rear end (axle), original engine and turbo, no water in the I/C, no fluid in the power steering pump, and it would build only minimal boost, shifter detents were gone so one could very easily make the mistake of going from Drive to Reverse while moving which could cause tranny damage.

Tried to do a launch on it, and something smelled like it was burning, it clunked into first gear, slid into second, and overall felt like the transmission was filled with mud.

The interior, however, was reasonable. Slight damage to the carpet on the drivers side floor where shoes have worn through the carpet, sun visors kinda sloppy and dangling, but otherwise clean.

I advised Eric this truck would be fine if he had $6k to throw into it to get it back to working condition, otherwise avoid it at all costs. I personally could see how a new turbo, transmission, and engine rebuild, plus a paint job would make things better, but why do all that work when you can find a clean one that works for less?

Hey James, I really do appreciate your coming to meet me and driving that Typhoon. While I could tell that certain things were wrong with the truck, there were numerous other things I never even would have thought to look at. If I happen to find any other Typhoons in the area that are for sale I'll be sure to send you a PM and have you come take a look at them.

Once again, thanks a ton.

I'm always happy to help in any way I can, because that is what makes a board like this a good place - people helping people.
