Flex plate causing knock?

Ive been trying to track a false knock problem recently. Ive done everything, DP dimple to quit hitting manifolds, checked for exhaust leaks you name it. Yestruday I got under there and looked at the flexplate as a last thought. As it turns out, the convertor I have on there, has an adapter ring to mount to the flex plate. The flex plate as we all know, has 6 bolt holes, three used and three unused for other apps. The flex plate and the adapter ring have a reddish orange tint to it and a kind of dust. I recognized this from when I took the DP off and found it was hitting the exhaust manifolds. My questions would be, if this was hitting together like it looks like it is, would it cause a rattle at certain RPMs and would it be enough to cause false knock? Also, how the hell would I fix this? I can post up pics if anyone needs to see it.

Re: Flex plate causing knock?

sounds interesting, pics would be nice, but yes if theres any chatter or moving it will create false knock, remember when people get false knock from locking the converter cause its so harsh, same type of deal.
why do you need a dapter ring? is your converter a non-lockup?

Here you can see the actual bolt that holds the TC to the Flexplate.

This is where the other app hole is and you can see how the adapter ring (just what I call it, could be hitting/rattling on the flexplate.

Here you can see the reddish orange dust that could be from clanking together all the time and possibly magnetizing like my DP did to my exhaust manifold.

Re: Flex plate causing knock?

Hmmm.....interesting one.

IMO it could be a cause and if it was me Id put a washer on each TC to flexplate bolt between the tc and flexplate to act as a spacer. This would get that adaptor ring thingy off the flex plate so you could at least see if the KR changed any.

If it doesnt change the KR then take the washers out and start the search all over again.

yeah thats a good idea, make so it doesnt rub or take off the spacer and grind the edge where it contacts the other tabs

false knock sucks to find, good luck

Im definately going to try that tomorrow. The noise started roughly around the time I put that convertor and trans in, maybe shortly after.
