fixed: cracked bellhousing and flexplate/pics

After replacing among other things the fuel pump, fuel rail, AFPR, vac. hoses, ic hoses and tuning up the Sy this winter, truck was tested on the road about a month ago. Didn't get too far until truck started making a serious amount of noise.

t turned out that the bellhousing was held on by only two bolts (plus one was broken off) and had a five inch crack in it. Flywheel was cracked all way around bolts. Take a look at pics to see other damage. Previous owner or trans shop must have been in a hurry to put it back together.

Has now been fixed so I added a few new picture. Trans cross member was bent so it was replaced.

that dont look good.
i've personally seen a reputable syty shop not put in all the bellhousing bolts(upper 2). and when asked why they didnt put em in, replied "you dont need those two in".
it makes you wonder about other shortcuts they take.

Sorry to hear about that, but now might be a good time to inspect some of those oil leaks. Looks like valve covers or possibly intake and oil pan or possibly rear main seal.

The same thing actually happened on my 92 Jimmy. Mine started to feel sluggish sometimes and it turned out there was only one bolt left in there, the stress caused the flexplate to crack. I may still have it laying around.

The transmission cross member will have to be replaced.

Answers to above:

Regarding oil leaks. There are none. To make the pics look good we polished and armoralled the oil pan :) Actually, there is a lot of crud on back of engine. The oil drain was leaking when we bought it (the threads were stripped and someone installed one of those petcock like drains). It's been fixed (with an oversized drain) and nothing is currently leaking.

We do have the brace that goes from the xcase to the motor. It is just not in the pics.

Noise it makes: Started out as just a light ticking sound coming from under the engine. Eventually it was very loud and similar to a main engine bearing problem.
