Filter depth in Deep Trans Pans

Guys,

I guess our Trans filter goes to the bottom of the stock pan ? So, when U go w a Deeper pan, do U have to lower the filter down ?

I got my beefed Trans from PATC, and the deep pan didn't work out so I removed it. Then I noticed that they had wired the filter in - I guess so that it wouldn't fall down into the deeper pan. Now I'm about to install a Summit deep pan, and I noticed that they have included an extension for the filter - I suppose to extend it down to the bottom.

The other deep pan I was going to use had some pedestals sticking up from the bottom about 1-1/2" that would appear to be there for the filter to rest on ?

So, my question for the guys w Deep pans is - Do U know if your filter was lowered ?

It depends on the pan.. Mine is a TCI which has extensions cast in the bottom to hold the filter up. My understanding is that Derale pans use the cooling tubes that are added to hold the filter up and some other after market pans provide extensions for the filter. Ive only used the TCI pan so thats the only one Im 100% sure of though.

Correct
TCI- cast extensions to hold filter at stock height
Derale- Tubes to hold filter at stock height
B&M, cheap foreign copies- Use a extension tube to drop filter to bottom of deep pan.

I still need to order a extension for my filter on my ebay special. still 25 bucks shipped for a chrome deep pan with a drain plug ain't bad.

Hey Guys,

Another Q - on the seal that goes up in the Trans that the filter neck goes thru. Mine was super tight - I couldn't get it out w/o destroying it. Now I'm having a hell of a time getting a new one in.

Did U guys have this problem - any tricks ?

The best tool that I have found for removing the filter seals out of the transmission bore is one of those paint can openers. The "hook" is curved enough to grasp the top of the seal and it is long enough to reach with no problem. Just be sure to hit any sharp edges/corners on it with a file so that it won't scratch the bore if you get a little careless. As far as installing the new seal, a little clean ATF usually does it for me. If that don't do it, try a little vasoline. After the seal is lubbed up, I just press it in the transmission bore using the filter. HTH's

My memory is a little blury around this subject, but I guess GM had a filter with a long neck for the GM deep pan. I don't know part nubmers however.

One for sure. I'm using the Derale pan and the stock filter is sitting on the cooling tubes. No problem there.
