Experienced Coil Over Conversions

LIL QIK

HELL YEA I GOT BOOST!
I've got a second gen 4x4 Blazer project that I've started for a AWD conversion and LSA swap. My question to you experienced guys is...what is your opinion of the ride difference of your coil over conversion? Would you say it was a noticeable difference? I've lowered the 4x4 and completely replace the front suspension. Lowered the front with a key swap and adjustment and lowered the rear with a cheezy ass block. It's got the look that I want but the ride is still horribly rough. So now I'm considering the coil over swap for the front and the rear. But was hoping for some legitimate reviews from some of the guys that have done it.

Also....is anyone still selling the old DIY coil overs for the front? I just put all new stuff in the front and would rather just keep it other than putting some coil overs in...

Comments?

Thanks...Dave

Re: Experienced Coil Over Conversions

JSM coilovers are the only way to go.

Thanks for the input Damian....I've seen on some of your other post that you run the coil overs...what's your input on the difference in ride? And I'm kind of hoping JSM will pop in as well and let me know if they'll sell just the coil overs so I can use them on stock arms. As far as the rear....I'm considering their link setup for the rear. I've heard the dual adjustable Viking shocks they use are pretty nice.

It's just a six

I rode in my friends Syclone with coil overs in the front. It is a huge improvement!!!!

Very nice ride.

Night and Day difference. Way, way better. Much smoother and handles better.

Re: Experienced Coil Over Conversions

Just recently switched out my AFCO coilovers to the Viking (JSM) for stock arms. Haven't driven it yet. But the Spring Diameter is a big difference for clearance with use with stock arms. Also, wanted the Double adjustable shocks, compared to the Singles I ran before.

I bought them from JSM. They are the same Coilovers they use in the Tubular arm kit also.

That's great....thanks for the info guys.. I've sent JSM a message.....hope to get a response soon. I'm also looking to do the double adjustables on the front and rear....

They were a direct bolt in for me since I had to trim the upper arm for the Larger diameter AFCO springs. They just need to be properly spaced in the Shock tower with washers

My AFCOs are way too soft, thats why I recommend Kings.

Re: Experienced Coil Over Conversions

We can surely supply Viking shocks and 2.25" springs for the front and you can trim the stock arms to fit. If at a later date you want to upgrade to the tubular arms we can do that.

any specific questions are best sent to jsmachineandfab@gmail.com as myself of mike hardman will get back to you ASAP.

Re: Experienced Coil Over Conversions

I have an older JSM A-Arm kit and QA-1 coilovers with Hyperco 600# springs. I would recommend going with the newer coilovers JSM is suppling. The ride with the QA-1's is much improved, but I had add a spacer, and mess with it to get a good balance of ride height, stance, and drivability. I've had them in and out more times than I can count, and as Sean mentioned it's tight with the larger OD springs. All that said, I think what I planned to do was work on the entire suspension first before adding go fast upgrades. I added the ZQ8, lowering leafs, set back plates, rear sway bar, Borgeson, steering shaft, and Bilstein HD sport shocks all at once. I was a completely different ride. I added the coilvers & A-Arms later and still noticed a big difference. Next up is Cal-Tracks and Afco adjustable rears (thanks Krupa) to tighten up the suspnsion further. Sorry so long winded....just wanted to share how I went about it. Good luck!

Re: Experienced Coil Over Conversions

Local truck to me that has the full JSM front coil over kit with tubular arms and 3-link rear kit. I have a compete set waiting to go into my truck.

The difference between stock and coilovers is night and day. The truck stays flatter, has less roll and steering is improved by not allowing the front tires to slide and push during cornering. The truck actually corners now instead of yanking the wheel and feeling like you're not going into a turn. Ride height can also be adjusted from the coilovers too. The Vikings are double adjustable so you can adjust your comfort level of how soft or hard you want to ride. We messed with the settings on the shocks before installation just to see if you could feel the differences and you most certainly can.

Re: Experienced Coil Over Conversions

For those that want even better options for shocks, Viking makes a complete line of upgraded also from remote reservoir, 4 way adjustment to fully computer controlled and active. Of course the price changes but just throwing that out there.

We do have 1 sy kit in stock, and enough material for several more that will go into the welding stages soon. So that kit is now fully developed and ready for shipment.

Thanks Eric.... yea but it's just the AWD game. I couldn't afford to get back into a real Typhoon. But after playing with big horsepower in my ZL1 I just had to feel it in something AWD. So I picked up a pretty decent 4x4 Gen2 2 door Blazer for cheap and got started. So I threw together a spare LSA power plant and gonna try a 6L80e with my AWD transfer case. But if it doesn't work I've got the 4L80e as a backup. Basically I really missed the AWD and am trying to build a "Typhoon II" so to speak....lol. So please don't hold it against me guys.... love the SyTy's..... just couldn't afford to find another decent one just to tear it apart. But the experience and resources are priceless. Not to mention the parts community has come a long way with these trucks since I was around before. Thanks again for all the info on the coil overs.

Do you have any problems with the back end bottoming out with the lowering leafs? I had 3" blocks in the back with stock leafs, and Koni reds, and it was pretty bouncy. I put in the belltech drop leafs, got 1" lowering blocks, set back plates, and set the Koni's to the stiffest setting... it wasn't as bouncy, but it bottomed out constantly. Took the 1" blocks out and same thing. I didn't have any weight in the back either... even took the spare out.

Do the Afco rears just bolt right in, or am I dreaming that something would be that simple?

Re: Experienced Coil Over Conversions

Coilover rear shocks should resolve your bottoming out issues with lowering springs or blocks.
