Exhaust Question

Wondering what to do with my exhaust, does it pay to buy a high flow muffler or just run a straight pipe in place of it?

Muffler will have nothing to do with emissions and the reduction in backpressure will help spool faster. I am doing it and have had no issues at all.

My exhaust is stock from the converter forward with a straight pipe from the converter back. It definitely isn't too loud, but I do think it drones too much at highway speed for my tastes.

I plan on ordering an ATR exhaust from RK when I get around to it.

Before I went for a ride in Daves truck, I wasn't sure that I would like no muffler. I thought it would be to loud. After riding in Daves truck, the straight pipe would get my vote. It isn't that loud and it sounds good.

If you go with the straight pipe, you may start to overboost, especially when it is cold out. I had that problem with a Dynomax muffler.

id say alteas half the exhaust opening mods seem to result in overboosting and worsened boost control on the stock turbo/wastegate.

my truck has had no mufflers or pipe past the cat for more than 6 months. i do suggest getting the pipe for your ears' sake. it is muthafukin loud and resonates the cab. boost control hasn't been an issue.

My exhaust is stock now, if i got the complete ATR exhaust (headers, downpipe, muffler, cat) and a new wastegate would that lessen the chance of overboosting as opposed to a straight pipe from the cat back?

With the ATR stuff - having the aftermarket wastegate will help. Overboosting can be cured. Some trucks are probably more prone to it than others. I was very fortunate and didn't have any when I went to the straight pipe. You might have some droning at highway speeds. I think mine is loud if riding in the back seat - but how many of us actually ride in the back seat? I don't even remember why I was. Hardly seems fair.

Different people have different results. Some can practically take off the entire exhaust and not have problems, while others get mad overboost just by gutting the cat. In general, a less-restrictive exhaust will make boost harder to control, and the stock system can't handle much more...

My Syclone came with a Cat, but no muffler(from the factory). The pipe that runs back from the cat has come loose from the cat, and is full of holes. It's a lot louder then my Typhoon. I'll probably take it down to the muffler shop and have them put a pipe from the cat back, and then see how it sounds. If it's too loud, I guess I'll need to put a muffler on it.

I did take it out for a few WOT runs, and you definitely hear it spooling up, and then hear it at WOT. I guess it won't be a sleeper if I don't put a muffler on it.
