Exhaust leak from turbo itself?....How to check for shaft play?

Still trying to figure out exhaust leak under boost.....the leak only occurs when approximately 10psi of pressure is built up. My question is, can a turbocharger itself leak? Would it make the same *tick, tick* sound?

It looks like the turbo was rebuilt a few years back before I bought the truck (found a receipt in glovebox)....the exhaust leak was present when I bought the truck. Is there a way to test the turbo on the truck? Can you check for shaft play while on the truck? Or does it need to be off the truck to check for shaft play?

Where the down pipe bolts to the turbo it could leak. Use red rtv or make a gasket up for it if it is leaking.

With the truck off you can grab the impeller and check for shaftplay... Some slight side to side is acceptable but in and out play is no good.
