Error code 44

Hi and greetings from Finland. I have owned about one year 1993 stock Typhoon and the motor is almost brand new. But theres been one thing that I am worried about:

The engine check light has been showing a few times and the error code is 44.

Here is the info that I got from the web:

>Code 44
>O2/Lean exhaust

>Check the ECM wiring connections, particularly terminals 8 and 15. Check for vacuum >leakage at the TBI base gasket, vacuum hoses or the intake manifold gasket. Replace >the oxygen sensor.

Vacuum hoses/intake manifold gasket are quite new and so is oxygen sensor and tbi gasket. So it could be the ECM:s connectors. I have located the ECM but how I can check the right terminals? Theres no info on the ECM about that?

If you are interested here are few pics related to my cars:

Sorry about my bad english.

Re: Error code 44

might it be the feul pump taking a crap on you?

So the fuel pump is checked and working fine. We have also checked the wirings on the ECM...

Could it be wrong error code? Car works perfectly but when you speed up with overdrive(if you speed up with D it works fine) it will give you the error code 44(engine check).

Please help!

Re: Error code 44

So, does it run OK?

Well this is the strange thing and I hope I can explain this to you(my english is a bit rusty)

The car works and runs ok but when you push the pedal to the floor and have OD selected it can stall about and second like it turns the engine of and after the "second" it will get the power back and running. After that the engine check will show few minutes. If you drop to D and speed up this wont happen. We have tested the fuel pump and the O2 sensors.

And by the way after this "power loss" and engine check(error code 44) it wont pass the finnish emissions so the engine(or ecm) is quite messed up with something. But when you turn of the motor and back again it will work fine....

Like I said its quite strange.

Re: Error code 44

This is very much like Code 31 = OverBoost. Are you sure you're reading the codes correctly???? Do you have a scan tool you can put on it?

31 is MUCH more likely to occur in a SyTy than 44. 44 requires the condition to be present for several minutes before it sets. Not like what you described above.

Yeah the code has been detected on scan tool. And we have tested the turbo also.. Like I said this is wery strange:(

Re: Error code 44

OK. Check the scan tool O² voltage. If it remains below .3V for 50-100 seconds, 44 will set. Watch the O² voltage with it in closed loop. Does it 'cycle' normally? If not, maybe it's contaminated, even if it's new. Drive it with the scan tool as well. Especially watch the O² voltage in OD, when you "make it do it".

Check the TAN ground wire on rear of LH head. It is in same ring as blk/wht ground 450. The tan wire is O² reference ground.

Could the exhaust system be restricted? Might dilute the intake charge to the point that it reads 'lean', but hard to believe it could do this for 100 seconds.

If you can make it do it consistently, it should be possible to find it. It's not as tough as an intermittent problem. 44 is set by low O² voltage. You should be able to see this on the scan tool, and evaluate the conditions that make it occur.

Ok, thanks again for the great tips:)!
I will do these things when I have the time cause I have to take it to a repair shop. Luckily its near my house:)

Could this thing do any damage to my car if I drive it? If its just a sensor error/fault then I think no?

Re: Error code 44

Edit: Heres some new info about the fault/error.

I didn't remeber to tell that we changed a new catalysator(dynaflow if I remember right) and after that the error that showed only when you speed up with the OD is showing frequently, almost everytime I take it to drive. And now even on D and is shows like its starts to "jerk" the whole car and when the engine check light shows it goes away but after that the emission test wont pas because it gives too much waste. Turn of the engine and back again the waste detector is ok and you can pass the finnish emissions straight away. So it could really be the O2 sensor. I have to try to order the authentic sensor(we have used the spare part version thats cheaper here in Finland) and change to that. Lets hope that this will be the reason so I can relax a bit;)
