Engine?

My Typhoon just blew a hole through one of the pistons, not to mention it was blowing oil through the turbo prior to that. So basically what i'm trying to say is I need a new engine! I'm looking for an engine that has a little more then stock horsepower but not enough to where I need to change everything. Like the drive shaft and stuff like that. I do have a new Walbro fuel pump for it and i'm pretty sure a fuel regulator. That was to try to stop the detonation on the old engine. So does Rockford Racecraft make a little bit better then stock engine that they will crate and send to me? Or do you guys have any other ideas? Please let me know as soon as possible!

or find a good engine builder locally and save yourself thousands. If it were me I'd call Mike Lee and get all the good parts and then find the builder.

Personally I think getting a motor built is kind of a crap shoot, I've heard of many motors built by local shops, Mc Coy's, and Rockford Racing going bad, not bad mouthing anyone here, but shit happens.

If you ask all the guys on this board that did build ups last year I'd bet less than 50% are running right now, in fact I'd bet is more like 25%.

Although I really appreciate the referrals, I'll be honest and and say I am not the best source for a budget rebuild. My engines are built with quality pieces and assembled to withstand lots of abuse. Unfortunately quality is not always cheap. JE pistons/Eagle rods are standard as well as a nitrided crank, and 100% ARP hardware.

If you want a quality motor that is going to make lots of power please give me a call.. My engines start at $4995, so if that is out of your budget I recommend calling McCoy Motorsports, or finding another quality local machine shop. Whoever your choice, make sure they are familiar with turbocharged engines and it doesnt hurt if they know sytys really well.

If you need parts, I will try my best to match or beat other vendors pricing.

I will be sending Mike money in Nov. for my engine but he is right not a budget build but this thing is going to be solid and will be begging for more boost. In my opinion Mike is cheaper than McCoy though, Mike uses Je, McCoy uses trw, and there are a bunch of other little things that made me decide on Mike. Good luck with your build.

Hey Mike,

I had always told myself I would go with the JEs when I needed a rebuild even though they are double the cost of the TRWs. But.....talking with some of the GN guys they said they have heard of multiple failures with the JEs under high boost. Something to the effect that they try and shave so much off of them to save weight that they are real thin in the ring lan (sp?) areas and start chipping off?? Have you heard of this with SyTs at all?? I know the Buicks are different beasts......but they are the closest things to us out there. TIA

ANY piston will fail under detonation. it's just that the JE may be able to take slightly more abuse and the JE is definatly a lot lighter.

They had no detonation issues apparently from what they said ................just plain failures.

I think what he is getting at is that the TRW may have less detonation 'issues' then the JEs, and they cost half as much....

Detonation in any form is a bad thing... But for people on a budget and that aren't looking for the ultimate in power, a more tollerant piston seems to fit the bill quite well.

Is there an advantage of having JEs over the TRWs? Other than the weight?

I'm not knocking either piston... Just questioning whether the extra money spent is 'necessary' for someone that isn't looking for killer power(or even someone that is).
