Engine stumbling

So I got a chance to work on my truck for a few hours yesterday. Found out that the battery simmilar to a PC680 wont start my truck.

Wonder why I was told its the way to go, for some reason it dont work. Battery is rated higher than a odyessey.

So I got the side terminal battery out and attempted to turn truck over. Timing was way out and needed to be dialed in. I got truck idling and let it warm up at bit. Put my timing light on and looked for markings. Im under the impression im going for the far bottom mark indicating "0"? I read about some wire to disconnect to put it into 0 but i dont know how or where to begin and it sounded like i had to disassemble more of the interior by the ecm. I just dont know.

Upon accelerator pedal being depressed truck started to stumble under load. I have been chasing my tail around for a while with this and have put so much fourth id hate to give up now.

I am sure some one can help or give me some insight. Thanks in advance. Joe

Re: Engine stumbling

Most likely the problem now that I have a slight idea of where it is I can try.

Have a feeling it will work.

Re: Engine stumbling

You have to disconnect that wire by the pass side kick panel mentioned in those threads in order to get base timing. Disconnecting it will stop the ECM from auto advancing the timing.

You dont have to disassemble anything. Just reach up there, find the top edge of the carpet and roll it back. It's right there.

Re: Engine stumbling

Yea, here i am thinking its a wire on the ECM you know how its got like a few attached wires on the actual unit. well anyway i read both threads word for word and clearly see where that wire is.
thanks truck will be dialed in closer

Re: Engine stumbling

I did get a bit further today. I disconnected the wire. Brought the timing to 0. shut vehicle off. Plug in connector and thats it.

Put my fuel pressure gauge on the port. Took multiple fuel samples. Some type of bad gas. the ethanol had started to seperate. I purchase the gas like2 weeks ago. Put stabil in it and took from there. Took more samples and clarity got better.

I was able to move my truck today after making correct timing adjustments. I did notice the fuel pressure was inaccurate on my gauge at first and the fuel was almost surging and hammering inside the gauge. like ticking . prob. injectors..? Well to get to the point on this topic the truck wont go into gear and run. Me and my dad are like arguing about things and hes telling me its TPS and what not.
I mentioned IAC, And he keeps telling me CURB IDLE. the truck runs idles, but he told me it needs to go up in IDLE becasue its dropping below. He showed me a simple test which was cutting the wheel and watching the truck stall out real fast.

Whats stock idle supposed to be anyway?
Is it adjustable. How do i tweak if it is. ( I kept telling everyone its not adjustable) Like a Set screw thats up by the throttle linkage... . I have not attempted to or tried to turn any thing at all.

Right now the truck idles around 750-800 and when i put it into R or D it just boggs right out.
Did make some advancements on timing. That did seem to work.help.

My fuel pressure is like 38-40 I did disconnect the VAC line and NOTHING happned. I thought the pressure was supposed to rise when the things disconnected.

Is my fuel pump bad? Whys it cut off. Read up in my manual and nothing really covers it. Reading something now about Rough Unstable Or Incorrect Idle and Stalling but its a long list of troubleshooting. Nothing in the section pinpoints the staling or idle speed adjustmenst

Re: Engine stumbling

Would a Intake and PCV hoses not hooked up have part to do with IDLE speed? My intake is not setup at the moment truck runs/idles but put in D and it stalls.

Manual says it could be many things, im leaning towards the PCV system and possibly the intake tube/hoses. Did not have my comp. with me to run datamaster or get any DTC.

I Had truck running and unplugged the IAC and it did nothing.

Yeah thats a big problem. See where that line comes from.

Post pictures if necessary.

Re: Engine stumbling

currently getting a 42 DTC. Does this indicate a bad ICM.
I ran through the manuals test. Indicated a bad ground or bad ICM.

Having so many problems its one thing after another. Went back to the same crap with battery. New battery dont crank thing over. Not providing enough volts when trying to start.
Put the OEM style BIG thing on which i have NO room for and am back to trying to decide if im going to relocate the thing in the bed or some where else. I really thought I was set with the PC680 style battery

After getting the correct volts it was timings out. Disconnect EST plug, than back to square one.
I brought my comp, with data master and logged some stuff but still cant figure out how to save a file for anytype of future refrence. Datamaster indicated a 42 code. some EST Error. Really not ready to start spending again.
Was already @ the brink of ordering a new ICM, Rotor and Dist. cap. Im going to need a New Dist Cap. or a number off a reputable cap. I just ruined my cap.

Re: Engine stumbling

I've gotten a code 42 before just because one of the bulkhead connectors on the ECM was loose.

Make sure the connections are fastened tight to the ECM and the chip is seated firmly in your ECM before buying any parts.

Re: Engine stumbling

I need to find a new cap asap. I tried my local parts store and they tried presenting me with some odd looking cap. I inspected the inside and it did not have the springy contact.
Either way it looks like im going to be buying something

Re: Engine stumbling

Seems like my TCC switch is stuck. or broken.

Not sure where it is. how to locate/replace. Seems like when Truck is put in Drive it just stalls out.

I might sell my truck. I have had enough.

Re: Engine stumbling

No luck what-so-ever with this truck.ended up getting a new cap/rotor. I tried to start today and it didnt give me anything but issues.
I jacked truck up and disconnected the 4 prong plug located on drivers side trans area (tcc sol) to see if i can get truck to actually move and today, well i couldnt even make it to start. Some sort of test to see if tcc sol is bad. I dont know wat else i can do.

Re: Engine stumbling

The TCC has nothing to with how it runs. That only has to do with the torque converter locking up when in driving down the road in 4th gear at a criusing speed.
A 680 will start the truck just fine as long as it has a good charge. I have had a few, they go bad from lack of use.
Where are you located? Might have someone close that could lend a hand.
What mods have you done to the truck? Even mods that you think don't matter, might.
Kinda sounds like your jumping all over the place, bad gas, pcv, vacum lines, trans, ect. Start at one place, exhaust all possibilities of that and go to the next.
You replaced the cap and rotor, what about the plugs and wires?
It will run but once in gear it stalls, did you reset, clean, or replace the IAC sensor?
Did you fix the fuel presure problem? Plug a test wire into the fuel pump test port with the engine off and set the prersure to 42-43 if its a stock truck.
Are all the vacum lines in good order (new, clean, no cracks, properly routed and hooked up, ect)? These trucks can work a nerve to no end, but take your time, go slow and focus on one piece or part at a time. That is the only way to properly diagnose and repair.......

Re: Engine stumbling

The other day truck ran fine . went to put in D and it didnt go anywhere. Today my goal was to put everything back in order and run a datalog and get some info being that prior tests were being done for no reason. dist and all checked out. The cap and rotor are new. Wires are new as well. Most of the parts on truck are new on the engine. Not sure why when i disconnected the 4block trans thing to try and get truck to move it would not start. I chased my self today for about 2hr and got all huffy puffy.
I have stock AC delco plugs and NGK in it now.

what you mean when you say RESET IAC? hows that done?
Have new Sport machine vac kit and that all checks out
Only got the hint of the TCC becasue some one mentioned it and i read something that said if truck stalls out right away gaurentee its the TCC or TCC sol gone bad, and i read a series of tests and made it to the second before i could no go anyfurther. other than that. that is the only ideas im aware of that can be bad. nothing else was a problem before and its currently stemming out

Re: Engine stumbling

Do a search for I A C. It is the idle air controll. When you disconect the battery, the computer needs to relearn iac settings. After battery is reconected, put the truck in rev for a few seconds, and in drive for a few seconds. That helps the computer relearn what the load is and how to adjust for it.
The transd might be a new problem and not related to the other stuff.

If the TCC is locked up it will definitely stall in gear. I have driven locked up TCC before. I won't recommend this, but if you want to be sure, just could start it in neutral, rev it up a bit and drop it into gear. Done right it will start moving and all will be well until you come to a stop. If the truck was pushed to get it rolling first you would take quite a bit of the shock off the transmission/drivetrain. You can disconnect the solenoid to see if it is being electrically commanded on or if it is mechanically engaged. Scan tool data would be helpful as you could see the TCC command from the ECM.

Re: Engine stumbling

Truck is definatly locked up. Going to have to really think about a flat bed. Reputable trans mechanic. Honest tuner. and whats left in my savings account. This whole issue has been stewing on me for a while.
