I LOVE 4UM SUPERSTARS
Re: engine rebuild

If you have a little extra cash, Id go with SRPs. I forget the exact part numer off the top of my head. Im sure another member that knows will chime in. I wanna say they are 139628 for .030 over but dont quote me. If I were you, I would go with at least a .005 over piston and just have the block honed out a little. Not sure what the .005 overs part number is. They are a super nice mid grade forged piston at a reasonable price. Great piston for the money.. If you use these, definitely get the crank rebalanced as they are much lighter than stock pistons. They also use a thinner ring for better sealing and less friction.

are the SRPs better than JE

Re: engine rebuild

JE's are stronger & are rated for higher boost. SRP does not recommend going over 14 psi. If I remeber correctly. You should probally ask them just to be sure.

Wiseco makes a good piston. Diamond Racing make nice ones.

I don't like JE for personal reasons. I'm sure they make a good piston, I just don't like their business ethics.

There are a few good piston companies out there who make pistons for the stock bore. I'm assuming you want to use the stock bore so you don't have to have machine work done.

Good luck.

Re: engine rebuild

What deciscion makes you keep it a stock bore. After a certain amount of clearance you are pretty much getting a bore job,I guess you could mic it out and run some forged pistons that allow more clearance. Ask a machine shop to check things out for you. It's nice to keep costs down, but it could end up costingyou moreinthe long run if things go wrong.A align hone would be a good thing to try make everything evened up.

Re: engine rebuild

If its gonna be a stock motor, Ild just get replacement pistons. Ive been on them for almost 100k now with no problems. And I beat the hell out of my truck.

Re: engine rebuild

The key to a long life boosted any thing (specially a our 4.3's) is NO knock through proper A/F's, use of a WB 02, good tune and quaility maintenance / oil. Lot's of guys get long life with stock / mild engines even though they run them hard with higher boost (like Tooky for example).

That being said, I rate the pistons according to INTENDED USE. Tell us what you have in mind as far as HP, rpm, daily driver or weekend toy. Be honest with yourself and you will be happier in the long run even if it costs you bit more now. Most of the guys that have big problems are the ones that come to my shop and say "Oh daily driver, not that much planed for mods, just a run at the track here and there... etc." and then are bitching a year or so later after the heads, cam, NOS, more boost etc. and 6000+ rpm shifts with bad tuning waste the pistons, crank, rods or the whole "mild build / DD" short block.

That being said, as Dyna Glide commented above, the Wisco are good but spendy, Diamonds the same, JE's also. SRP not as light but eaiser on the wallet. TRW's are strong and very reasonable in price but heavy and not real good for a high RPM screamer but a damned good piston for a budget mild hop up build that will see 5500 or so rpm. I like the Hell Fire rings on the TRW's.

Re: engine rebuild

im not sure about the hp yet but would like it to be reliable and run in the 11's it wont be a daily driver had some head work done now have 2.02 1.60 valves need pistons to work with those thanks for the replies guys

What is funny is Wiseco and JE are both owned by Dover Corporation, same company.

Run as 2 different companies though but report to same head boss.

Re: engine rebuild

If your looking for a 11 sec truck, I would do 0.030 over bore with forged piston (as recommended above) and Eagle rods, not sense in build up up a motor and honing the piston biston to save $100. You might wnat to think about a 4 bolt conversion and you you pick out a camshaft as well.

Yup, I've worked for two Dover companies now and we're all setup to operate as separate entities. Even though they might appear to be competitors I'm willing to be they share some IP and resources. SRP and JE are the same company too. Being under PMi they're probably setup so one is more geared toward budget/high volume and one is more high end, low volume/custom. :)

If you're paying for 4-bolt, get it bored .030. You'll have out of roundness issues if you don't, as well as potential ring seal issues.

The (Speed Pro/TRW 2441l30 are good pistons, and reasonably priced. I've never seen a broken TRW due to it being an insufficient piston.

Your heads don't match your cam, unless they're heavily worked.

Re: engine rebuild

If you have stock heads I would run a stock cam or Comp Cams 09-412-08. The stock heads suck and I would avoid them at all costs. They have a ridiculous "spiral staircase" shape on the intake ports (I've posted pictures in my Member's Projects vortec head & cam install thread). L35s have a normal intake port, and Vortecs have the best intake port (for a cheap cast iron head).
