Engine Questions

Guys,

Traffic must be getting Hi on here, I couldn't get on the Forum mid-end of week. I posted the following on SyTy.org :

The shop manual for 1993 says that our engine - LB4 or "Z" - has a balance shaft above the Cam. I have my old '93 block mostly apart, and see no balance shaft. Have the front cover off, but don't have the cam out. So, did we have this shaft ? The manual also says we have forged rods. If that were true, how come so many guys have thrown rods, like me ?

Also, anybody using aftermarket Oil Pans or Harmonic Balancers ? Any advantages ?
What's everybody using for forged rods ? Conley has mentioned Carillos, but they R at least $1000. I thought I heard guys were using Eagles, which R alot cheaper in Summit - who doesn't offer Carillos.

Guess I'll go w J&E pistons - they are lighter and supposedly give more HP. Wonder if they are as strong ? :)

The "Z" doesn't have a balance shaft (which was made by Briggs & Stratton FWIW) the L35 or "W" motor does.

I think guys like the Eagle rods for the price.
