I am going to be pulling my motor this week sometime, to inspect and rebuild for the reason that i have 130,000 on the clock. My question is with upgraded parts using stock heads am i limiting myself or can i produce a pretty decent street truck that can kick some ass. I am not looking for a 1500 hp monster just a fast street truck that will be a daily driver for awhile. Maybe around the 500-600 hp range. Am i crazy or is this possible? Was reading alot of posts and my head is spinning. Thanks ahead of time for all your help.

Thanks,
bill

I think your crazy, especially for Daily Driver :D If you want 500-600 Hp, I would use Vortec Heads and PTE67 Turbo. If you wanting to use stock heads for the EGR passage/emmisions, I would use L35 and have them heavily ported. You could attained you goal with those heads.

To say nothing of the bottom end....

Pistons, rods, mains etc. If tuned perfectly then they may last but that hp with those heads and turbo you're asking for problems.

You've got "whileyou'reinthereitis"!!!!!

Good luck. What's your budget? You might get better bang for buck if you ask before committing....

Stock heads won't produce 500-600 h.p IIRC they flow about 125 cfm which simply sucks. Vortecs are 225-235 out of the box and do better with work. For many years people wondered why their truck would not run on the big end and many thought that it was due to aerodynamics. I made a post years ago that stated I had better flow in my urine steam than do stock heads. The aerodynamics do not play as big a factor as many think. The small camshaft does not help either. Soon after the Vortecs came onto our scene and a better camshaft, then the trucks started to run well straight through the qtr mile. Many vortec equipped trucks are running e.t.'s that are appropriate with the mph and some have a mph that is high for the et (not unusual for a turbo depending on the low end setup). IMO, the stock heads and small camshaft will be a severe limiting factor in your quest for big HP. Want the totally stock look, go L35's and work them to the max or if you don't mind a modded intake, go Vortecs. Read Tooky's site on his build with Vortec's. You can do the math to see what he has for HP (using an average weight for a Sy).

Re: Engine build (attention syty experts)

Its all in the amount of money your willing to spend to reach your goal.

600hp is going to cost you a good bit to keep it together and running right.

Figure most vortec head "kits" are running around the $2k mark. Pistons, rings, rods, fastners will run another $1500 easily. New or used bigger turbo, anywhere from $400 to $1k.

So your easily looking at a "normal" rebuild to make power being around $4500. For that, you might as well buy one of the vendors short/long block packages.
