Re: engine block question

What kind of block is that - ? They look like vents/drain holes.

There also isn't anywhere to mount the retainer for the lifter spider thing..

Where did you find that thing?

Re: engine block question

looks like vent tubes for the bottom end, since the lift valley is closed off.
I could see where they were hold downs for closing off the valley, but odd they'd be there, and that big with no threads in them. But I could also see them being vent tubes, but why vent tubes. That area shouldn't really get a lot of pressure, and if it did, it would just go through the pushrod holes in the head. Maybe another type of oiling?

Re: engine block question

To me it looks like someone was trying to make it so that no gunk gets to the bottem end. With the screen covering the front and rear of the valley. Then raised tubes up so nuthin can fall in. Kinda like baffles.

Re: engine block question

those are air vents. with the lifter valley blocked off the air that is displaced by oil returning to the bottom end must go out somehow and that is it.

you usually see the valley blocked like this so that you don't get oil draining onto the cam causing more drag on the motor. you want the oil to drain from the heads to the pan without touching any rotating parts.

my alum bowtie motor is the same way.

Re: engine block question

I like how they smoothed out the valley area helps w drain back and makes sure no loose casting material, the tubes are vents for the cranks and so no oil runs across the cam (windage). also the screens are to trap any mid size parts from falling all the way to the oil pan like bearing in the rocker arms

Very good idea...this mod would have saved me a rebuild.

Re: engine block question

Thanks, this was a bowtie block I was looking to buy, found out now that it can't be converted to wet sump.

Wow, that's some old scholl circle track/drag racing stuff. Smooth out block to help the oil return to the pan, epoxy screen so if anything break it doesn't fall back down. I like it.
