I pull the Sy in and out of the garage on almost a daily basis. Dont go driving, just move it out, move it back in (I use the garage for work). Lately, Ive been getting a small puddle of diff fluid. Some days its a few drips, other days its anywhere from a 1/4-1/2 oz of fluid. I know its diff fluid cause it has the gear oil smell and the drip location is about where the front pumpkin is.

The truck had basically been on jackstands for the past 1.5 years and now has about 450 miles on it from getting it off the jackstands. I do recall having a puddle of oil under the truck, but shrugged it off as just a slow drip from my oil pan bolt leaking from not being tight. Now looking back, it was probably the diff.

I honestly dont remember the last time I changed the front diff fluid, but could it be possible that I overfilled it? I need to get under there with some degreaser and clean out everything and then see if I can find the location after sitting for a night.

Did you change the yoke to put on a Gilbert shaft? If so,you should replace the seal too.

Yep, I did.... and for the life of me I did it so long ago I cant remember if I did the seal at the same time.

Thing is, the puddle looks like its directly under the diff, not where the p.shaft yoke is. Again, havent gotten a chance to put the truck up in the air, so I could be wrong. Sometimes theres a misc drip a foot or 2 over from the big puddle. Makes me think the fluid is traveling down the axle tube.

I'd bet that's your leak.

The yoke seal? Good place to start if anything. Guess I'll go buy some degreaser and a seal (just in case) and see whats up.

Do you know the part # for the seal offhand Jimmy?

I was taught to put silicone on the pinion shaft before you put the yoke on. If not, oil can work it's way up the pinion and out of the diff. Just a thought.

check the seal on the drivers side axle tube where it goes into the front diff too. i think mine's leaking from there.

If you start up a vehicle, the worse thing you can do is not get it up to operating temperature and drive it for few miles. Seals need to warm up and expand to remain effective.

So I finally crawled under the truck today after hitting it with degreaser and letting it sit.

Culprit........front axle tube, driver side.

So, with that...anyone got the part number handy? (or I need to go look on sytyauthority.net)

tips, tricks, hints for changing it out? Looks like I'll do it at the Miami meet while on the lift.

Gary called me today and said his GM parts guy said the axle seal is not available anymore and there are 2 types of seal. (I guess they changed the design). There are SOME still on the shelves at dealers, but that doesnt help me if I dont know what design I need to get.

So, help? Where can I get a seal other than GM, and is there a specific type?
