DP wrap?

Is it a bad idea to use header wrap on a stainless steel downpipe, headers and crossover...

BTW, all the tubing is made from scrap out of a nuclear plant, aka the good stuff.

Thanks,

Re: DP wrap?

off this week ??? you have a job? have it ceramic coated, looks better header wrap soaks up oil and can start of fire

Re: DP wrap?

^X2. I wrapped my downpipe and crossover pipe with header wrap. Been like that for over a year now with no problems. Definitely keeps the under hood temps down considerably.

Re: DP wrap?

From my past experience, I would never use that garbage. I wrapped my headers for my Z28. I had it on for 3 years. I thought, this stuff is not so bad. I ended up rebuilding my motor...When I pullled off my headers, I crushed one of the tubes due to rust by simply pinching the tube. I was checking the integrity of the header tube. I live in the pnw where it rains a lot, but my Z was always garaged & only driven on nice days. Never again will I use that crap! How much more is a ceramic coating, 300bills? Ceramic coating will save ya cash and headache in the long run if you ask me, but who's asking:rant::lol:

Just curious how many miles you put on your Z in the 3 years with the header wrap

I had a friend that made some nice headers from a DIY Hooker header kit, wrap all the pipes nice & w/in a year, they were garbage.

I appreciate your input but my entire exhaust is stainless. My reason for wanting to wrap it is underhood heat. I'm debating an air filter directly on the front of the turbo and doing away w/ the KB cold air intake kit. My engine compartment is crowded enough....

Re: DP wrap?

I personally do not like to feed a turbo or supercharger hot underhood heat.
I like to feed them nice cold outside air if possible.

What grade stainless is your downpipe?

I'd guess it decent stuff or better.

I didn't build it, just own it.

Re: DP wrap?

Well, it sounds like you got it cheap or free?

Personally I would wrap the downpipe & install a turbo blanket to keep the temps down.
I would not if it was mild steel.

I think I put maybe 15K miles on my Z in that time. The headers were 14G nickle plated headers, thick material. I too put the header wrap on for decreased temps under the hood. In stop and go traffic @ temps above 85deg, my z would slowly overheat if I did not get air moving under the car. The nickle palted headers did nothing for heat. I should have had sent them to jet hot. I promise you, the money you spend on ceramic coating will be worth it's weight in gold! The ceramic will decrease your underhood temp as much or more that the wrap, no worries about oil on the wraped DP, no rust issues so you will not have to replace your DP! I understand it's a bit more money, but you will save money in the long run. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

I have been considering an attempt to moving my airfilter. I found a few ideas, but man o man, it is so cramped in the engine compartment. Crazy!
